…that “First!” has GOT to go! For a while now, people have been muscling each other on the keyboards to be the very FIRST to comment. This happens mainly on the celebrity gossip blogs– which I admit I love to surf– but I’ve seen this phenomenon pop up on a few reputable news sites that allow comments.
“I’m first!” “I’m second.” “Oh, I’m not first, after all.” Next thing we know, “I’m 10000000th!” will be keyed in. What is up with being first? It’s like a virtual marathon, where the cyber-runners are clamoring and almost dying while vying to be the first to comment on various blogs and forums. I once counted 9 “First!” comments on a forum and I was wondering if the moderator/owner appreciated the precious server space these insignifcant comments gobble up. How annoying.
But what’s even more annoying is that the “First” phrase is ripe with misspellings such as “Fist”, “Firt”, “Frist”, and even “1th”. Spellcheck and common sense are abandoned because of people racing against the clock lest someone else triumphs in snatching the “First” crown away from their clutches.
I’m not the only one who feels this way. “I’m glad to comment on a blog where people are mature enough to resist typing in ‘First’ all the damned time,” one commenter on a blog pointed out. Another gossip aficionado sheepishly confessed that she felt a rush knowing that she was the first to put her stamp on the comment section of a blog. Are people’s self esteem so vulnerable nowadays that in order to bolster it, instant personal gratification is obtained by saying “First!” on a blog/forum? I hope someone can please enlighten me on what the prize is when you’re admitted to the “First!” winner’s circle.
“I always check to see if I’m the first one to comment. Its a bad habit, I guess,” a fellow gossip hound shrugged.
Like all bad habits, the need to claim “first!” needs to be broken. Pronto.
And that’s the LAST word on this subject. NEXT!

Et tu, Brutus?
Humor me for a moment.
Be careful what you ask for cuz you just may GET it… ;-)
If at first you don’t succeed….
I wrote the
first haiku poem
in this thread…
Chris, you need to add 6 more syllabuses to your poem or it’s not a haiku!
I follow
unique haiku rules
in these blogs…
I’m first-born in my family. Does that count? Oh, wait. We’re not playing that game any more, or are we? (wink)
Seriously, I enjoyed the post. I am not one to rush in to comment, but I like leaving them now and then. I do find it funny when certain Deaf bloggers vie to be the first to “get the story.”
Ah well… There are many firsts in life. First kiss, first love, first vlog, first comment…. c’est la vie.

Those “first” moments that you mentioned are far more important than being the first to comment on some blog.
To highlight the ridiculousness of it all, two commenters engaged in a war of words over who was “First!”. And the reasoning of which time zone/s they lived in was so contrived and illogical that it boggled the mind. They took that SERIOUSLY.
Hee, hee. Hilarious. I fink I are the frist great grandma to enjoy my own flog?

You just may be! Congratulations…here’s your prize! *blank stare*
I’m 10000000th!
ZZZZZZZZZZZZZZZZZZZZZZZZZZZZZ!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!
Hello, KJ…or should I say Rip Van Winkle?
For a change I’m not in first. Besides commenting, notice how Ricky D. Taylor aka Ridor at RidorLive.com tries to be first to post anything and sometimes fabricate making it appears that he was first? He only acknowledges his close friends and what not if he happens not to come in first. What a crock. By the way check many people and businesses who got tangled in the State of Maryland, including some from out of state. http://casesearch.courts.state.....-index.jsp
I think the author of this post tried her best not to use names. Let’s follow her lead.

First Post was a problem even for slashdot back in ‘98. See how they handled it here (last paragraph): http://meta.slashdot.org/artic.....10/1445216
It’s just human nature. This was a problem even with VAX Notes (hi! I’m an old fart. It’s official!) way back in 1770. And probably even in 2000 BC with cuneiform tablets in ancient Sumer. “Ha! I was the FIRST to scribble upon that stone tablet!” :) We all see this behavior when people leave ’special messages’ upon freshly poured cement for sidewalks, right?
It’ll continue as long as the human race lives. Might as well as get used to it. :)
We all pine longingly to leave an indelible mark that will survive our own lifetime. So…
P.S. Chris, what, no cinquain? :-)
