I guess everyone’s prayers are being finally being answered. As I was reading Bob Woodward’s book (State of Denial), there are detailed accounts of Rumsfeld’s activities, thoughts, personality etc. The book went on to reiterate what we all knew to being with. He’s arrogant, self-righteous, and stubborn. He did not listen to reason and does not believe that he has to answer to anyone.
He has completely botched the Iraq war. Are we in Vietnam II? Why step down now? Is it because the Republicans lost the House majority and are poised to repeat the same at the Senate? If this is the case, how is Rumsfeld stepping down beneficial to the Republicans? Are they thinking of 2008 elections and their position there? Would it have been better for them if Rumsfeld had indeed stepped down before the GOP votes? All these questions will become more clear in the following days. But what does his stepping down really mean?
Rumsfeld’s stepping down will only make a difference if Robert Gates (former head of CIA, poised to take over) changes the strategy and policies of the unjust Iraq war. As exit polls overwhelmingly showed that the war was highly unpopular among the voters, Rumsfeld took this step. The way I see it, it was known that the war was highly unpopular even before the GOP elections. Why step down now? Are we just being lulled into a state of false hope? Or did it really take the GOP elections to make our voice be heard?
Regardless, we can’t leave Iraq in the middle of a war and it’s not safe for us to be there (unsafe for both the soldiers and the Iraqi civilians and govt. personnel). We are basically in a Catch-22 situation and it will be interesting to see how these events play out in the upcoming weeks.
For now, take a deep breath, rejoice: Rumsefeld is GONE!

Rummy stepped down? When? How? Why?
Please, whoever’s in charge of the universe, let this be true!!!
It is true:
http://www.cnn.com/2006/POLITI.....index.html
Whooooooooooooooo! Next step, Cheney, Bush, Rove, and Rice resignation coming up!
Come on Virginia. Give it to Webb!
Last night was a celebration, now this and Tester winning is the best thing I could wish for.
Good riddance, and, Rumsfield, don’t let the door hit you on the ass on the way out!
I wholeheartedly second that sentiment! Bush and Rummy dragged us in an unjust war, and a probably illegal one, under the UN standards.
I’m so glad that the Democrats won this round…. Now I’m hoping we’ll win again in 2008. The corruption and intolerance of religion differences and to gays in Washington needs to stop!

Awwww…don’t you kind of feel sorry for Don? In reality, Rumsfeld was such a really nice guy.
JoeC, How could you tell that “Rummy” is really a nice guy? Have you personally meet him in person or what? Rummy comes from the corporate mold. Rumsfeld was the one along with Dick Cheney hijacked the Ford presidency to the right which they made sure that Ford doesn’t lean to the liberal tilt of its time.
Rumsfeld is one of the neocons, who is much willing to bleed the hardworking American solider for the profit - $$$ Neocons play with geopolitics for $$$. Look at Cheney’s Haliburtion in Iraq!! The U.S. Congress is very infuriated with the Haliburton’s recent refusal of supplying the finanical sheets for audit purposes. What kind of corporation sucking out the hardworking American taxpayers’ money in name of patriotism???
Rumsfeld ought to let the military experts doing their own stuff to minimize the bodily injury to our American troops and maximize the effectiveness of battleground strategy to weaken the terrorist activitites. He didn’t! Rumsfeld was preoccupied with his personal accessories like expensive glasses how he realy looked on TV.
Rummy failed to provide all adequate protections for our American troops and dismissed the Pentagon generals about the necessity of large American troop presence in the pre-Iraq invasion. He chose the cost-saving and penny-pinching tactics for the post-Iraq plan!
Rummy never showed any remorse for the sadistic tortures of Iraqi people in the infamous American-run prison! He was the one who clamped on the releases of additional videos and pics of detainees being unjustifly tortured.
Donald Rumsfled will go in the American history as one of worst Secretary of Defense along with JKF/LBJ’s Robert …. (oops I forget his surname) whatever his name is.
Robert L. Mason (RLM)
Is Robert McNamara the name you’re looking for?
Betenoir, Yes, that’s what I looked for the name of JFK/LBJ’s Secretary of Defense. Many thanks, Betenoir!
RLM
history will not be kind to Rumsfeld–tone deaf, most often wrong, arrogant, condescending–these are all words that immediately come to mind with him. Gee Mr. President, you really ought to have listened to Colin Powel over Rummy, don’t you think??
He stepped down because he didn’t want his ass brought up on charges. I smell impeachment for Bushie!
I was just talking with my friend the other day. It is unfathomable that there was an attempt to impeach Clinton over his sexual alliance whereas many have gone wrong in the Bush administration and how his policies have affected many, both in the US and the world, not even an iota of possible vote to impeach Bush. Hope the time is soon!
I was so excited that Democrats have taken control of the House and the result for the Senate is pending. A lot of damages by the Bush administration and clearly, they have angered enough people, including Republican voters.
YES! that really ticked me off of poor political use of impeachment. If Pelosi is indeed the majority leader she better lead an impartial impeachment process.
I have a good feeling about Pelosi using her good judgement and be conscious about taxpayers’ money!!! The focus on Clinton’s sexual dalliances was a waste of taxpayers money, indeed.
Bush administration and its voters, especially those who voted him twice, have a lot to be ashamed of. Unlike other administration, the resignations of those under Bush speak for itself.
From the beginning, I never saw how he could possibly become a president. I am a Democrat, but I would go for a Republican president if I felt s/he was a better choice than a Democrat President.
I love Bill Clinton and because of the last 8 years, I love Bill even more!!! :-) I’d love for Hillary to win presidency in 2008 so Bill will be behind the scene helping Hillary with the policies that have been effective along with her ideas!
Who knows, Hillary’ll have her own dalliance as a sweet revenge LOL and to see if Republicans would smarten up from their mistake ;-)
Oops! Not last 8 years but 6 that Bush
has been in office. Guess I can’t wait for Bush administration to be gone or perhaps he’ll be impeached soon by the Congress ;-)
Stupid old farting dog, Rummy
That’s exactly why he does not want to take the new orders from the higher management (Congress)
Alright- frist things frist: It is not an illgal war. Congress ( including many Dem.s) has voted every year to fund this war. Having said that- Bush/Cheny/Rumfeld has mis-management this war. And finally- Clinton was impeached becuase he lied under oath about his sexual experience. IF he would have told the truth under oath-then he would not have ben impeached. PLease get the record striaght. IFY: I am not a fan of the republican party-but I do not like people not being truthful.
It’s an unjust war (where are the WMD’s? the reason for the war to begin with), despite it being voted on by the Congress!
Okay, semantics: it’s not illegal because Congress has voted to fund the war (of course - soldiers need stuff), but it’s wrong because the reasons to get the U.S. involved were misleading.
Personally, I think if 9/11 hadn’t happened, we wouldn’t be involved in Iraq. Hello? No connection… just a feeling of vulnerability on our part.
And as far as Clinton… Argue — and rightly so — all you want about Clinton lying under oath. He’s human and, ultimately, he paid (and yes, got paid, via book royalties) for that. My question is: What was Ken Starr doing wasting our money asking about his sex life in court anyway? Adultery is a HUGE problem in our society today. Doesn’t mean it’s okay to spend millions on one person’s cigar when we think we’re paying taxes for other petty things. Like, y’know, oh… let’s see… education and social security.
Yeah. As far as I was concerned, Clinton’s actions were grounds for divorce but not for impeachment.
Apparently, a affair with intern is an impeachable offense while sending soldiers to their death under false pretences is a praiseworthy act and one that only a traitor to the USA woud find inexcusable.
It’s very easy to find something wrong with somebody, as in breaking the law, when you have $50 million to dig around. That’s what Ken Starr did. I’d just love to have a special investigator do the same thing to Judge Starr.
your point is ?????????? If Congress felt that this was a “unjust” war then Congress should have cut off funds for it. That would have been the end of this. Instead, Congess(including many Dem.) keep voting year after year for this war. Please.. get the record stright.
I don’t have to agree with the Congress! Just because they chose to fund it, does not mean I agree with them despite them being Democrats! I never said the war was illegal.
My point: I don’t have to agree with the Congress even if it’s made of Democrats and I voiced out my opinion at the Polls, just like a lot of people have!
Also- there is a hugh difference between a “unjust”war-and a “illgal” war as some of you are saying.
Well, if somebody sold you a bridge in Brooklyn.. and you found out that it was a lie. That you spent all that money for nothing and ended up with, what, a stone or something? Wouldn’t you then want to bring the guy up on charges of illegal sale?
Just saying.. :)
Will Rumsfeld be charged for War Crimes? He allowed the tortures to occur under his watch.
In my opinion, he should be charged if we are going to show to the world we want Geneva Conventions to be respected. I know it won’t happen as all the old guard will close ranks and protect him as one of their own.
At least he is gone.
“old guard” *cringing
I never want to hear that phrase again. PLEASE.
The Republicans will never allow Rumsfeld to be charged with war crimes. Heck, they’re not even fond of the Geneva Convention or the Hague. You know, fears of a one world government and all that.
He may be incompetent, but at least, he’s OUR incompetent tool, or so the Republicans will say.
Someone got to be held accountable for many violations of the Geneva Conventions. It got to be someone in the Bush Administration.
This war is illegal and unjustified. There was never a proof that WMD physically existed. That was my biggest argument throughout all years. Find the evidence before you attack. Unfortunately, Bush decided just to proceed, probably because of another intentions behind it especially with oil and Haliburton.
Why aren’t more deaf people working for the DIA, NSA, CIA and Defense Department? How can a liberal work in the national security area if they are anti-military?
And when the Republicans came to power in the 1990s, they passed the Congressional Accountability Act, which included about 10 federal labor laws which the liberal Democrats refused to apply to Congress what they passed it on the masses.
Insults aside.
Rummy was the perfect person for that job. When it comes to war and Rummy is a mean ole’ bastard.
