Marylanders - I couldn't find the Peter Singer reference in this link, even after doing a blog search. Can you tell me which post to look at? Or better yet, the primary source from Singer - is it from Practical Ethics?

Thanks from a not yet tenured faculty member :)

I am not sure how you can perceive this issue as preserving a culture or language. Being deaf is a handicap, unlike being black, or irish, or speaking french. When it comes to life, I don't think humans should try to play God. If a child is born deaf, than that child is to be celebrated as much as any other child. But for us to chose whether a child should have down syndrome or be deaf, or smart, or blonde...this is not our place.

I think you need to look into your social stigma a little further and discover that especially in this case, the only ones with a social stigma are the parents who choose to have only a deaf child.

Blogs aren't valid statistics ! even if you add up ALL the blogs pro a deaf child on deaf.read, they represent next to no majority view anywhere. NO surveys have been done at all, it's just an debate in isolation on a deaf blogging site, what is lacking is real perspective.

Ben,
I understand what you're saying here, but the way you put it made it sound like you think Deaf parents are lobbying to make a hearing child DEAF. We're talking about allowing Deaf children to be born-- who would have always been Deaf from birth. No one is choosing to make them Deaf. They are simply choosing to allow them to be born. To me, this is the big difference.

The reality is many parents make a similar choice every day. We can identify birth defects through ultrasound, which is done routinely in pregnancies. Parents oftne choose to have their babies knowing the child will have Downs syndrome, and a number of other problems. Is THAT child abuse? Should we force abortion because those babies will cost us money down the line?

By comparison, Deafness isn't that costly. Deaf children are relatively healthy and can lead long productive lives, contributing to society. Many have accomplished remarkable things.
