I live with two girls who absolutely love food. One girl will eat anything, and has done so. The other won’t eat anything that comes from a pig, but she’ll eat anything else.
I’m probably the pickest of us. But we watch this show on the Travel Channel called Anthony Bourdain–No Reservations. It’s probably the only show that has made me want to throw up more than five times per episode. I’m not kidding. He’s got such a dark sense of humor and great sarcasm that you can’t help but laugh at everything he says. The food he tries are often the country’s delicacies and let’s just say…us Americans? We’re very very limited. I wouldn’t eat 90 percent of the food he’s gorged on, but hey, whatever floats his boat.
He’s a respectable guy who is a top chef and figures that he should try as many kinds of food as possible. For every place he visits, he always makes sure to find someone to take him to the best, least touristy spots to try all their delicacies.
*note to readers, you might not want to read this next paragraph because it’s pretty gruesome*
Anthony Bourdain will defend his actions more often than not. Once, he traveled to Quebec and joined a family to hunt for seal. Yes, I said seal. Now, Anthony was not into the idea of hunting seal because they’re such adorable animals and he didn’t believe in killing them. But that was the way of life of the people who lived in below-zero temperatures in Quebec. Eating seal was their way of surviving. The whole time they were on the boat, he would say, “I apologize to any viewers, I would never ever do this.”
After they killed a seal, they brought the seal back to their kitchen floor and savored every part of the seal, spared no blood. Even Anthony was skeptical at first, but he eventually tried it and said it was quite tasty. What’s more appalling to me was the fact that they ate everything raw; nothing was cooked.
I could barely watch it. I was peeking through my eyes and wanted to throw up so many times. But the show is actually fairly good and I do learn about different countries, what they eat, and their culture. The one thing I know about Anthony Bourdain is he will never ever sing karaoke.
Speaking of food:

Yup—he also was taping his show in Beirut before the first airstrike and hadda evacuate back to the States. Also, he’s the author of “Kitchen Confidential” which is a biography of his career from do-nothin’ pothead Vassar alumnus to a world-class chef. Quite all-around brilliant and rough around the edges. A character, indeed!
I do find seals to be adorable when they are just pups. When they grow up, they become quite ugly. It is common for people up north, Quebec and smaller provinces to hunt seals. In fact, they have massive hunt every year. A lot of people aren’t aware that seals are one of the fiercest species out there. They’ll hunt for anything, they’ll even kill killer whales. They aren’t afraid of people, they’ll lung for your throat at the first opporunity they get. They’re no tamer than the alligators are.
Adorable or not, they have to hunt them because they grow in population at a rapid rate which is why we have the massive hunt. Cruel or not, it’s part of life. If a person approach a seal without a weapon, s/he better hope that God will answer his/her prayers because it’s not going to be easy to make some defense moves. Appearance can be deceiving.
I don’t like to appear cruel, but it’s perfectly natural for animals to eat other animals. Otherwise, we would have a serious problem with overpopulation. I do believe in being as humane as possible in killing an animal, I don’t believe in torturing animals. No animal should be eaten without gratitude.
