I feel like this is a battle! I’m sitting here trying to figure out when to jump in with a new blog and feeling a little anxious about posting anything that isn’t about Gallaudet. I totally get the gist of what is going on there, but I don’t have an opinion about it whatsoever. And if you think I should have an opinion, then sue me. I don’t.
I spend my mornings (5:30 am til 7 am) at the gym. Yes, I get up that early. That’s one reason why I tend to crash around 10 or 11 at night.
It makes me wish that DPHH would start at 5 or 6, then I can go home and sleep for 10 hours, and wake up all energetic and refreshed to get a start on my weekend.
A lot of folks I know like to go out right after work, just hit a local bar, chat it up. Eat some appetizers, buy super cheap drinks (a bunch of me and my friends had $3 margaritas, who can pass that up?!), and not feel so groggy when you have to go out at 10 at night. It makes more sense to go out right after work, instead of having to go home, then back into the city, then try to muster up energy after being up for nearly 18 hours (yeah I’m not a college student anymore!). Anyone into the idea of going to DPHH at 5 or 6pm?
Anyway, while I’m at the gym (on the treadmill or elliptical), I’ll watch the news or sports (not a lot of options there).
Yesterday, they were doing coverage on the shooting of three police officers at a police station in Chantilly, VA. Since the shoot out had happened within the past two hours, they couldn’t give much information. It must have made everyone so anxious because everyone just wanted to get home and feel safe in their homes.
They covered the story pretty well, but it made me flash back to the sniper shootings in Montgomery County. How anyone can easily possess a gun? It gives me the chills.
This guy had a record. He was out on bail. He went on a shooting rampage. He was shooting to kill police officers, and he did. He killed one, and injured two.
I think that gun laws need to be reined in. They need to be strict about who gets these guns. This 18-year-old kid had a hunting rifle, 5 pistols and an AK-47 style assault weapon. Where did he get them from? Now he’s dead, but what possessed him to do something that violent? HOW can an 18-year-old kid have access to an AK-47 style assault weapon–isn’t that military issued?
I dislike watching the news because it stresses me out. But I don’t want to be oblivious as to what’s going on around me. But when it stresses me out, it takes a toll on my health. It’s like they say, guns don’t kill people, people kill people. The gun laws need some work, we can’t have teenagers accessing them, nor people with criminal records. Don’t just brush this incident aside. I’m sure this kind of gun stuff happens every day.

We tried the 5-6 pm DPHH in years past but without much success. Unfortunately, it seems that most people prefer to go home after their long day at work, unwind, get their disco nap in and lastly, get all gussied up in their sequins and feathers before hitting DPHH.
Then why call it a Happy Hour?
I talked to an ATF agent once, they aggressively track down illegal firearms sales and so on.
But the plain fact is, you can make gunpowder yourself. And, if you know how to work metal, you can make a gun yourself. Many people in VA make guns, and “private” gun shows and sales are rampant in VA.
DC itself makes possession or sale of handguns illegal, so much for that tactic as it existed and DC still became Murder Capital, USA.
Canada has lower murder rates– and they ban handguns, but okay deer rifles and other hunting weaponry. It’s a lot harder to conceal a deer rifle in your pants than a Glock ;).
Second amendment: A well regulated militia. The government should never have the sole power to kill people. Or shoot lawyers while quail hunting.
Bang, Bang, Dick Cheney shot me down.
Apparently the veep’s first name is a profanity. Snort.
Whoops! Fixing that.
Okay, fixed. We installed a new profanity filter early last week and it may still include words that we’d allow, so we appreciate you pointing it out. The “bad word list” originally had “gay” and “lesbian” in it!
We really need to get tougher on gun laws, and on who can and cannot own one. I respect the 2nd amendment, but guns should be kept out of the hands of criminals, or people who have a history of violence. And the gun shows loophole should be closed.
I actually am one of these crazy zealots that believe that the Second Amendment needs to be repealed.
It was written in the late eighteenth century immediately after a war of independence. The vast majority of people continued to hunt for food. They also had to fend for themselves against attacks by Indians, rebelling slaves, and the occassional revolt.
The Second Amendment protects our right to arms with the intention of using them should we ever need to overthrow the government (or if we are cruelly oppressed by them). That’s valid…back in 1780.
I seriously doubt our present ability to defeat our evil, nuclear-weapon-wielding government with handguns. I believe that there is no comprehensible reason to put guns in the arms of ordinary citizens. Many other industrialized countries do fine without letting their citizens have guns.
Guns in a household are three times more likely to kill a member of that household and five times more likely to be used to commit suicide. Guns are so, so much more likely to be used for violence than self-defense. Given these and additional statistics here, the Second Amendment is unacceptable by today’s standards and needs to be repealed, repealed, repealed.
BAN GUNS. BAN THEM.
So you cede the power to kill to the government? I think the path to a more sane gun policy is not to repeal the Second Amendment but simply to ban the sale and posession of handguns and go after them with the same zealotry that the government goes after tokin’ potheads.
Or that, too.
By the way, the power to kill does not lie exclusively with guns. There is a delightful cornucopia of alternative murderous weapons out there.
you crazy zealot you.
I think everyone appreciates a non-Glasses post now and then.
:)
indeed
Oy. Tell me about it. But not a gun post.
I think someone needs to post some pictures of kittens and flowers, or, at the very least, a quiet beach? Pretty please?
Hey, I like making fun of famous quail hunters. How about puppies?
