If music was a religion, it’d be my religion.
I’m a HUGE fan of music. It’s my savior, it’s my escape. It’s where I feel like I most belong. It’s something I can relate to. It’s something I understand more than anything.
No, I can’t sing. I can’t play an instrument. But I know good music. I can appreciate someone’s voice. I can appreciate someone’s drumming skills. I can appreciate when someone knows how to entice an entire audience. I can appreciate when someone who has rock star status and wants to make a difference.
I listen to mostly rock music. I read their lyrics, I can find meaning behind each of the songs. I can feel what they’re feeling when they sing. It gives me an escape.
I might not know all there is to know about music, and I’m okay with that. I still appreciate good music, sometimes I even like the bad stuff. I can’t help it. I’ll listen to anything once. I do listen to the occassional country band, so sue me. (I can’t stand their ballads, but when they get going, they really know how to party).
I absolutely love concerts. They’re my favorite thing to do. They cost $$, but in the end, it’s all worth it. Everyone’s there to appreciate the music. I try to go to one concert a month. It’s a way to connect with the band. It’s a way to tell them to keep making their music. It’s a way to show my support. I love it when they have the entire audience sing along, it sounds amazing.
I’m HOOKED on music. I listen to it every day. I’ll listen to my ipod at the gym (I use a loop). I’ll listen to my ipod on the metro. I’ll turn the radio on at work. My radio on in the car is never ever turned off. When someone else is in the car and they don’t like what I’m listening to…ha, too bad. I’ll crank up my radio and just sing along with my favorite songs.
I will get obsessed over certain songs. I have gotten obsessed over songs. I will get obsessed over bands. I have favorite bands. I love it when someone turns me on to a new band. I love it when I hear something on the radio that really makes me go, god I love the sound of his voice or the instrumental. I’ll obsess over wanting to go see a certain band in concert. I love warm weather because that’s when all the concerts really start getting crazy. You just go and be a part of something for a change.
Music is a part of me, and yes, I just have to work extra hard in learning the lyrics. And to me, that makes the words mean more to me. Music is my religion.

are you sure you’re deaf? :)
*chuckle* You sound like my husband. He would probably say that music is his religion and he’s deaf! He worships a Vermont band, ‘Strangefolk’ and we go to their annual ‘Garden of Eden’ festival with a group of deaf friends. While I’m not entirely familiar with their music, I do enjoy camping, having a campfire, chatting with friends, dancing with a crowd by the stage with superhuge speakers which I can feel the music with my whole body, playing card games or volleyball during the day, etc. Just a weekend of relaxation, fun and merriment. ;)
Hope to see you at Strangefolk Garden of Eden again this Year! September 15th-17th
I also listen to Strangefolk with my whole body..
xo
Hey, rest assured that you are not alone. For instance, for many years, there’s been DeafHeads (Deaf Deadheads aka Grateful Dead fans; Strangefolk can be described as a spin off band). To quote one Deafhead, “a Dead concern is my therapy”, smile. Kudos on your sharing!!
oops! I meant concert, not concern!
i need an interpreter for 2 dark star orchestra concerts in NYC on May 12 and 13th 2006. If anyone can help me find someone who knows the grateful dead music and can interpret Please email me asap at samblues@aol.com
Could anyone tell me more to help me understand what music appreciation is like for deaf people? Thank you.
