[...] Usually on Valentine’s Day as a single guy, I either had a date or I didn’t. Some years it meant quite a bit to me; other times it was just an insufferably painful holiday, and in reality, just another day on the calendar. Although she’s still finding her voice, Erin Himmelmann, one of the newest bloggers over at DeafDC.com, has the single woman’s take on the day: The Most Commercialized Holiday of All Times. Gee, Erin, I thought that was Halloween, or perhaps Christmas. I saw Halloween junk in the stores as early as late August, and it can never be too early to put out those Xmas ads all over town.
maybe what adam said, it was a harsh generalization. I don't hate it. I'm just not crazy about it.

but this year I just happened not to be so scrooge about it. I actually didn't mind being out and about on valentine's day. there wasn't anything special happening. It felt like another day, with the exception of getting a card from my mom (she sends cards for every imaginable holiday and I LOVE it!) i just don't want it to be competely blown up and extravagant. it was just right this year.

It used to be all you had to do was buy flowers and maybe some chocolates for your loved one on Valentine's Day. This week I had a dinner during the weekend, got overdose of chocolates and other goodies at work for 3 consecutive days, and still had to buy flowers on the "real" Valentine's Day. Really, people need to chill and keep it confined to just that one special day. It's like an anniversary-- celebrate it on the day that matters.

For your information, Christmas is on December 25, New Year's Day is on January 1, Thanksgiving is on the third Thursday of every November and Valentine's Day is on February 14. Every other day is irrelevant so please confine your chocolates and greetings to yourself.

Oh, by the way...Happy Belated Valentine's Day.

Hmm... Erin, you just gave me a flashback -- I used to say all that, word for word. I still think I haven´t change my viewpoints as I agree with you, maybe.
However, the older I am, I seem to respect holidays more nowadays -- to me, it is just ONE EXTRA day on top of any random days. Ain´t nuthin´ wrong for a couple to share joy, celebration, gathering, love and/or sex on V-Day - it´s just a chance to be in the spotlight with the public just for the hell of it because life is too short to be a tightarse. For the record, I was a tightarse.

And just one more thing, I am single (btw, single is my middle name) and I can appreciate V-Day. Once a while, I can mess some chicks´ mind like a prank by strictly flirting with them on V-Day and bailing out. I get a kick out of that and so does the chicks, too. We ended up great buddies for years.

So, Erin, may I join you for dinner tonight?

I am not single and I still think Valentine's Day is overrated.

I agree, the loved ones should say "I love you" or do those Valentine-y things on random days. That would enhance the excitements.

High expectation kills.

<i>"Anyone who’s single knows it. When they’re single, they hate Valentine’s Day."</i>

Rather a harsh generalization, don't you think? I may not be desperately single, but I sure don't hate the holiday. It's nice. Sure, it doesn't apply to me that much (sort of like Christmas and Easter), but let others have the fun.

However, your point throughout the rest is that people should not make a big deal out of this and make this an absolutely pivotal day in their relationships. I agree. :)
