DeafDC is proud to announce its presence on almost all of the panels at the Vlogging/Blogging the Future of Gallaudet Conference organized by the Coalition for Critical Inquiry! This Conference will take place on February 3 at Gallaudet from 9 a.m. to 5 p.m., the location will be announced at a later date and it is FREE. Please make plans to attend the Conference, which is open to all, and watch the lively discussion take place between intelligent and respected Bloggers from across the nation.
Here are the DeafDC representatives and the panels that they will serve on.
“Whither Gallaudet?”
DeafDC Bloggers Christopher Brown and Bobby Cox along with other Bloggers will discuss how Gallaudet has been impacted by the power of Blogs.
“Future Visions of Deaf Identity”
DeafDC Guest Bloggers Alok Doshi and Kristi Merriweather will talk with fellow panelists about deaf, racial, and other identities in the deaf Blogosphere.
“Blogging and the Future of the Deaf Community”
DeafDC Manager Shane Feldman will join this panel which will be moderated by DeafDC Blogger Allison Kaftan as they look ahead at the future of Blogging and the deaf community.
Panelists also include Patti Albee, Christopher Heuer, and Katie Roberts who have been frequent commenters on DeafDC, and David Evans who is a DeafDC Blogger but will represent his personal Blog at this Conference.
Here’s a summary of the Vlogging/Blogging the Future of Gallaudet Conference:
Internet communication played a major role during the recent protests at Gallaudet, even catching the attention of media analysts outside the deaf community. Vlogs and blogs were used heavily to share information, publicize fast-breaking news, and debate events and issues. Popular websites generated unprecedented traffic levels and several crashed during the arrests as thousands of people sought live updates from bloggers on the scene. Other sites hosted lengthy discussions about the protest, with people from all corners of the deaf world coming together in sometimes respectful, sometimes raucous debates. What changes will come to Gallaudet as a result of these discussions? How is vlogging/blogging impacting the deaf community? How will new communication technology continue to change the shape of our world?
This one-day conference, organized by the Coalition for Critical Inquiry, will explore these and other questions. Noted deaf vloggers/bloggers will share their experiences and ideas about how Gallaudet and the deaf community should move forward after the protests. Participants have been selected based on quality of previous posts about the protests and represent diverse perspectives in the deaf community. The conference is open to the public and will be available online via realtime captioning and. Voice and ASL interpreters will be provided.
The Coalition for Critical Inquiry provides public forums for objective debate and critical reflection on controversial issues affecting Gallaudet’s future. Membership is open to students, faculty, staff, and teachers. Its goal is to model intellectual dialogue, respect for diverse viewpoints, and commitment to social justice for the Gallaudet and larger deaf community. All events organized by the coalition are committed to presenting a range of perspectves to help members of the community come to informed opinions and decisions.

Update:
Christopher Brown’s name was crossed off of this list because DeafDC was provided with an early version of the Blogger list. Jill Bradbury had notified DeafDC that no changes were made to DeafDC Bloggers, only to other Bloggers, so we could announce the list on DeafDC. We were later provided with corrections to the DeafDC list and then received an updated list of Bloggers. Chris is not included in the Conference because he has not responded to Jill Bradbury’s invitation.
Update II:

February 3rd falls on a Saturday?
Yes it does.
Is the blogger who shall not be named going to attend just to say how ‘important’ he is to the D/deaf community?
One more question… link to the conference website?
Wondering…
I just updated the Blog to include a link to the CCI website. It is:
http://www.ccigally.info/
Just read a simliar entry on Chris Leon’s blog. He has a full list of all the people particpating.
Wish I lived closer and could attend. Looks like it’s going to be a good one!
Congratulations to DeafDC.com participants who are invited as panelists for this conference.
It would be nice of you to name all of other people, who are vloggers and bloggers invited to the conference as panelists too.

I strongly feel that vloggers deserve the same respect as bloggers, and it takes as much work to create vlogs than bloggers. It involves a lot of preparation, filming and editing the videoclip.
Yes, it will be a great conference, and I believe the impact of vlog is very significant too. What puzzled me that why didn’t they invite Ricky Taylor and Joseph Rainmound? I am wondering why….
I wish DeafDC incorporates more vlogs in their website to make it more balanced, instead of ‘text-based’ only. It shows that American Sign Language and English are two respected languages in the Deaf Community.
Please consider this request.
Thank you,
Amy Cohen Efron
Amy:
I do appreciate you taking the time to include everyone on the list who’ll be part of the conference. That’s the opposite of what I call exclusivity and “holier than thou attitude.”
Thank you for also sharing about how equally important both, vlogging and blogging are as well as how ASL and English should have the same kind of respect, no better or less over one another. Because of our ethnocentric society, ASL has been subjected to abuse, suppression and attempted eradiction that English users take their language for granted and never have to worry about their language being toyed with and impoverished in the process.
Vlogging will help preserve ASL by near-native and native signers to be used as modelling for others and/or a study to be conducted among linguists. It’s an exciting time for the cultural and linguistic aspect of the Deaf community.
Amy Cohen Efron,
I just updated the Blog to explain what happened. In addition, I agree with you, Vloggers probably put in more time to develop their content than Bloggers. When I prepared Vlogs for the NAD website, it was a time-consuming process to come up with a script, videotape everything, edit it, and insert captions into the Vlogs.
Thanks for your suggestion. It’s something we will think about.
Shane
Shane,
I am very pleased to hear about this. It is very promising. You can start by inviting a “Guest Vlogger” on your DeafDC.com with thought-provoking topic as you do with the “Guest Blogger”. This vlogger will do the ‘product’, and what you would do is to make sure that your blog site/software accepts the third-party embed coding to allow videos to be seen.
Let us all know when DeafDC.com is ready to accommodate vloggers!
Good luck!
Amy Cohen Efron
And they didn’t invite Jamie Berke, either, who’s blogged for as long as anyone could remember. Several other bloggers / vloggers such as Steve of Woparsg and Ken of Bibliomarket weren’t invited either. What about those ones who did cartoonn blogs? Maureen Klusza, Tony McGregor, Dan McClintock and others who had work up on SignUpComics.com? Wonder if those people will be invited to the next conference when it’s expanded bigger?
I agree with you Hmm… I noticed that too! Makes me wonder why….
congratulations to all of the invtées. What is sorely missing is a cartoonist. Newspaper readers value opinions of cartoonists. It is never too late to invite the cartoonist, n’est-ce pas?
Bonne chance à tous!
Jean Boutcher
I think this selection is based on people’s English writing skills. Most vlogs are ASL based and they may not be up to deafdc.com’s communication standards.
If that is the case and it will backfire because this organization is excluding the world’s known blogger and many others just because they are culturally and linguistically Deaf.
Promote inclusion as we have a lot to learn from one another.
Could you clarify which selection you’re speaking of? The Gallaudet-based CIC selection of people appearing at the blog/vlog conference or DeafDC.com’s selection of bloggers?
It seems as if you’re talking about DeafDC and I’m not totally clear which comment you’re responding to.
English skills? Joey does not write very well. There are a lot of grammar errors in his blog. What’s more, most of the videos related to Gallaudet protests are not his work. People submitted the videos to him. He vlogged once in a while compared to many other vloggers such as Ron Fencile (Save Gallaudet), Teri Sentelle, Amy Cohen Efon, Jon Savage, and so on. Chris Leon? Jared Evans? They post very seldom. Jared did not discuss Gallaudet protest very much. Many great and active bloggers and vloggers who posted the entries pertaining to Gallaudet protest are not invited. Many bloggers and vloggers named on the list are not ACTIVE! Most of them stopped blogging after the JKF’s termination. Huh?
I’m happy to see so much interest in this conference. I wanted to clarify a few issues that have been raised about the people invited to attend. First, this conference was not intended to focus primarily on blogging/vlogging. Rather, my original goal was to focus on what Gallaudet needs to do to reorient and thrive after the protests. I asked people to attend whose blogs/vlogs contained insightful, forward-looking, and innovative ideas about this topic. I went with people whose work I was familiar with and also sought input from other vloggers/bloggers. There are hundreds of high quality deaf vloggers/bloggers; it’s not possible to include them all. No slight at all is intended to those who were not invited.
Let me repeat - this conference was originally conceived as not about vlogging/blogging per se, but about Gallaudet’s future. It has, to some extent, evolved to focus on the impact of vlogging/blogging on the deaf community, but the selection of participants still reflects my original conceptualization. It was never my intention to include the most popular/influential vloggers/bloggers. I invited people based on their ideas, not their cyber lifespan, quantity of posts or quantity of hits. This is why some participants would not “technically” be considered bloggers (though to me, this raises the interesting question of definition. What, exactly, qualifies someone to be called a vlogger/blogger?)
Second, this conference associated with the new Coalition for Critical Inquiry. The goals of this organization are two-fold: 1)to provide public forums for objective debate and critical reflection on issues arising from the Unity for Gallaudet protests. 2) to model intellectual dialogue, respect for diverse viewpoints, and commitment to social justice for the Gallaudet and larger deaf community (check out our developing web page at ccigally.info). Vloggers/ bloggers whose work does not adhere to these criteria were not invited. This does not mean that I don’t consider their work to be important to the deaf community. I intend to have a particular kind of dialogue (respectful, thoughtful, and proactive) at the conference, and I make no apologies for that decision.
A third selection criteria was to show a diversity of perspectives in the deaf community. This is why some vloggers/bloggers may be less familiar to the general deaf community. Some were chosen to represent gender/ racial/ cultural/ communication modality diversity within the deaf community.
Finally, this conference is NOT organized by Gallaudet, but by myself under the aegis of an organization I started to encourage public analysis of issues connected to the protest. The CCI has no funds except what we can raise individually. When I first started organizing the conference, I kept it small because I didn’t know where I’d get the money to pay for flights, hotels, interpreters, etc. I’ve been fortunate to have strong interest develop from people inside and outside the university as I make progress, but we are still working with a very small budget. To anyone who feels dissatisfied with the scope of the conference, I strongly encourage you to organize your own show. Thanks for taking the time to read this post and allowing me to clear up some rumors and misconceptions.
The information you provided helps me understand what the conference is about. It sounds very exciting and I wish you the best. Maybe someday will have a webcast to encourage more people to watch the conference because this is an important discussion for many who cannot attend due to distance.
Allison Kaftan: Please disregard my previous post and the information I received was not accurate also Jill Bradbury’s post gave me the information I was seeking for.
This conference sounds exciting and it will certainly help Gallaudet become healthier and stronger. I look forward to it.
There’s one thing that I noticed: “Some were chosen to represent gender/racial/cultural/communication modality diversity.” Maybe I’m the one not understanding and feel free to help me when I say why wasn’t language acknowledged as ASL offers more than just a communication modality?
Katherine - I take your point and will use “language preference” or “language usage” in the future.
Thanks for taking it into consideration and I hope it will be added on the website of CCI about the conference.
Done!
Much appreciated! :)
Jill, we must have been thinking about this as exactly the same time! Here is my reply.
Perhaps Dr. Bradbury was simply trying to be brief by using the term “communication modality” to encompass ASL. As we know, that’s not technically accurate. ASL is a language, such as are English and Japanese. Sim-com, signed English, S.E.E., and other derived systems of sign language are modes of communication, not languages. I don’t know everyone on the panel personally but do note there are ASL users and oral deaf/hh in addition to users of other modes of communication. It ought to be very interesting to see the discussion about how Gallaudet should best deal with the communication modalities AND languages. That’s definitely been a hot topic in the blogosphere all along.
Thank you for recognizing the difference between languages and modes. Not many people do and those who do allow it to confuse people, thus hurting ASL and other signed languages (JSL, BSL, etc) of the world. It sadden me.
Whether it’s your words or you think Jill Bradbury meant this, I still feel it is disrespectful to use only “communication modality” simply because one wants to be brief. It is 2007 for Pete’s sake. ASL along with its users (any other signed languages of the world) has suffered enough and there should be a zero tolerance. It’s our responsibility to guard and preserve ASL in our country.
I am curious as to how Gallaudet should best deal with the communication modalities and languages too.
Oops, a typo! It should be “saddens” up there, not “sadden.” Not sure why editing was not an option. Oh well.
Looks to be a great conference. It’s got a great line up. I hope the selected bloggers will be able to attend, and will post from the conference about their experiences.
I am definitely attending, and hope to see not just our DeafDC bloggers, but also our readers!
A survey poll is up and check it out to see how many will attend the b/vlogger conference or Deaflympics.

Congrats on being selected.
Thanks. It’s an honor to be a continuing part of Gallaudet’s history.
Cool idea for a conference. Though I wish the most significant blogger of the Gallaudet protests was attending: the person behind gallypreswatch.com.
wasn’t it Tayler Mayer? Gallyprezwatch was what started the whole thing for me … I’d never read any blogs before that one, ever. When it suddenly closed, I felt like I’d lost the one info channel I had. Thank goodness there were others that I never knew about. Like DeafDC!!!!
It wasn’t Tayler Mayer. He’s a bright guy but the writing was far from his signature. I believe Mayer only designed the site.
I was the same way. GallyPressWatch was the site that, in a very real sense, introduced me to blogs.
Wow, what a great idea. I’m sure all 5 people attending will have a great time breaking their arms patting themselves on the back. Maybe when it’s done, they can circle jerk…
Grow up.
It’s funny that some people are treating this as the nominations for the Oscars. It’s only a conference on blogging and the impact on Gallaudet and its future. Not being invited means nothing on your blogworthy status. The only thing it really means is that Jill thinks you had nothing to contribute towards the Gallaudet protests, that’s all. It’s her conference, and like she said, if you don’t like it, go set up your own.
“The only thing it really means is that Jill thinks you had nothing to contribute towards the Gallaudet protests, that’s all.”
On the contrary from Jill: “It was never my intention to include the most popular/influential vloggers/bloggers. I invited people based on their ideas, not their cyber lifespan, quantity of posts or quantity of hits. This is why some participants would not “technically” be considered bloggers (though to me, this raises the interesting question of definition. There are many bloggers, vloggers and commenters who had contributed much to the protest. What you’re saying, Christian, is that you’re discounting those who are already known to be popular and influential (e.g Joey Baer) had nothing to contribute to the protests. Just that this conference is not about having the most popular or influential bloggers attend. It’s a mix bag based on Jill’s criteria.
Wow, I am one of the people invited - I am so thrilled to be part of this. I have such a desire to be part of Gallaudet’s future and to make contributions towards that.
I am also so thrilled to meet all of those people I have talked to online and make new acquaintances.
I am going to prepare for the forum by doing research on my topic and will do my very best to provide my opinion and information in a respectful way that will encourage dialogue between all of us.
The best thing we can do right now is talk to each other and make ourselves understood. Then perhaps we can all come together to take the first steps forward.
Oh, did I say how thrilled I am? I am so excited! *happy dance*
Wildstarryskies, AKA Katie Roberts
Ah, Katie! — hiding behind that name of Wildstarryskies :) We were introduced through my brother years ago in New York or whereever that was. He knew you from Gally days. Hope you’re doing good.
I trust that you’ll do a great job and won’t do us any disservice :)
I actually don’t know your full name. Is katherine really your name? Who’s your brother? Small world, eh?
Yes, Katherine is my name.
Neither one of us leave our e-mail address
to exchange information privately. Did you leave yours anywhere on this site from any of the posts you made?
same as my user name, it’s at hotmail
Since the 3rd of February falls on a Saturday, I predict a bigger crowd. Therefore, I hope that the conference will be held in the Field House instead of an auditorium.
From a JB to a JB plus both have the same letter count on each name ;-) Guess it’s past my bedtime and good night!
I just looked at the calendar and DPHH will be held on Feb. 2nd the night before the B/Vlogging Conference on Feb. 3rd. It will be fun getting to know all of the Bloggers before the Conference on the next day!
Ah, excellent! I’ll have to arrange transportation to DPHH. Or maybe not - don’t want our panelists out and drinking until the wee hours of the morning the night before!
Hey, count me in.
Long as there’s coffee provided in the morning..
I’ll be driving (rental car). Though I don’t drink at all. If you can spring a lemon coke, I’m game.
Though, that’d be for Saturday night. Friday nite I’ll be out with my sister after 6 years of not seeing here while she was in Germany. Though, nothing is firm at this moment.
The DPHH location has been announced, see you all there!
