Wow, I live in Foggy Bottom, and I can just imagine seeing fog as I enter the Metro station.

Great article, but please put Metro to rest and write blogs about something different like the new baseball stadium coming soon or perhaps a hot spot for deaf people.

Cool! I miss the uniqueness of the Gares Metropolitains in Paris. Some stations have a very distinct character - one of my faves is the Montmartre station, with a spiral staircase and a mural covering the entire staircase. Another neat one is the entrance by the Louvre. The London Underground has a couple of interesting ones as well. I agree with you about the general blandness of the SF BART system, but that's changing very slowly. The Fruitvale station has a tile wall done by Oakland schoolchildren, and the theme appears to be world peace.

<i>"For example, you could install fog machines in the floor at Foggy Bottom, and lend some aura to the area and station’s name."</i>

Fog machines blasting away in the dimmest underground station in the network? I can just imagine throngs of commuters disappearing forever in there.

Giving each station a personal touch is a much-needed idea. Round portraits of astronauts in L'Enfant Plaza won't do. I also like those the U Street murals, so I'd like to see WMATA keep moving in that direction. I also recall a cool abstract "swoosh" near the entrance in one of the downtown stations...Federal Triangle? Smithsonian?

First, though, all the lights need to be turned up to twice the brightness. Many of the stations really are too dim. Or maybe they're just trying to cover up the ugliness?

Cool! Haven't been to the U Street area in ages. Next time I'm in town, though, I'll have to check out the mural and grab a meal at Ben's Chili Bowl. Yum...

I still think it would be interesting to have the interiors of a lot of stations re-done, and in a way that would say something about the station/area.

The Green line Metro station near my home, which I think has the longest, most diversified name of all stations in DC, actually has a cool mural running on both walls near the entrance. The U Street/African-American Civil War Memorial/Cardozo Metro stop's mural has a jazz, African American theme. U Street Coordior is a developing area that has changed drastically during the last 10 years and is now a tourist attraction for people into jazz. This area used to be the "Harlem" of DC.
