I’m writing this from the Golden State, but I sort of half-qualify as a denizen of D.C. — my better half is there right now for the next few months. D.C. is one of those cities you either love or hate; there is no in-between. I love D.C., but right now I love Los Angeles more. *grin*
Where to start? I’m a native Californian, but thanks to my alma mater, I’ve lived in and around D.C. for six years, and thanks to my wife, who hails from Virginia, I get to visit D.C. and environs approximately once a year. Just long enough to renew my acquaintanceship with one of the major hubs of Deafdom.
At present, I’m more or less a writer, while I figure out what I want to be when I Grow Up; in a previous incarnation, I was a doctoral student in History. One of my writing projects is jotting down stuff like this for the edification of folks like you. One of my other projects is writing letters to various politicians and newspapers, griping about things I read in the newspapers and online. Yet another project stems from my love of movies: often, too many movies aren’t captioned/subtitled on DVD, and when they are, the extras aren’t captioned along with them. This also extends to first-run theatrical releases too, as I advocate for increased open-captioning, DTS captioning, and rear-window captioning (yes, I’m not fond of it either, but it *is* an option).
Even though I watch my movies and shows with the sound off, I definitely sound off in other ways, as you’ll see. That said, I’d like to welcome you to Sound Off! DeafView from the Left Coast.
