In this morning’s Washington Examiner, columnist Rick Snider commented on the inevitable return of the Washington Redskins back to the nation’s Capital.

For those of you not versed in Redskins history (and knowing I’m not exactly the Redskins guru in the DeafDC ranks), the Redskins played for most of its football existence inside the four quadrants of D.C. When previous owner Jack Kent Cooke wanted to build a new stadium next to the former stadium, RFK, he encountered politics with the city because the land that RFK is built on is federal land leased by the city.

Of course, Cooke feuded with the previous mayor of D.C., Sharon Pratt Kelly. Kelly’s inability to come to an amiable agreement with Cook probably led to her failure to be re-elected as mayor. Go figure.

Now, ten years later, Snider’s column states that the value of the land where the current stadium, FedEx Field, is built on, is worth the risk of an investment into building a new football-only stadium in the city.

And this is in the middle of a phase of new sports attractions into the city. The Washington Nationals’ new ballpark is expected to open in 15 months. Even the city’s local soccer team, DC United, is requesting a new soccer-only stadium for the three-time MLS champions. All of this is sure to bring star appeal back to the city, but at what expense?

I mean, c’mon, FedEx Field isn’t that half bad. I especially like the Club Level seating with “the world’s largest outdoor restaurant, serving over 30,000 patrons per game,” and its burgundy and gold (however faded) seats provide immediate pigskin gratification (oh man, am I starting to sound like a Redskins fan here). But, when it comes to raising the price of nosebleed seats and serving $8 hot dogs and $10 beers, the Redskins franchise will lose its appeal of a family friendly environment. Only people interested in making a quick profit of reselling season tickets or hard-core, die-hard Redskin fans will purchase the already ridiculous high-priced tickets.

So, it’s either a stay in Landover, where the current stadium is located…and continue to appreciate the fans who make FedEx Field the biggest and loudest in the country during the fall months…or, as current money-grubbing owner Daniel Snyder wants to, make the Redskins overpriced, uncompetitive, and let my beloved New York Giants make the playoffs while my fellow colleagues wallow in misery every December.
