Fantastic blog, Chris! I like your perspective on what the walls are for deaf people...they are not always physical.

"But even that would only be the beginning. I promise you, there are a lot of people—both hearing and deaf—who won’t appreciate that story or ever want to see another like it. And any attempt we make to find out why will be beaten to death in a barrage of comments accusing the deaf person telling such stories of being an outright liar, of being angry and always focusing on the negative, or of playing the victim. On top of that, maybe the factory foreman didn’t see the blood! How can the grocery store owner be blamed when ADA didn’t even exist back then! If we deaf people can’t get past blaming hearing people for all of our problems, we deserve to be treated with indifference! The world isn’t fair, get used to it..!"

I get the same arguments myself from hearing people. I'm not about putting the blame on hearing people NOW, but in order to make sure history doesn't continue to repeat itself, you have to understand and recognize the pattern(s).

Chris,

I am glad that you bring up this very poigant topic about the Washington Post writer sleathly describe the deaf people being cooconed in their own world.

I was told by one Gallaudet undergraduate student that the Drug Enforcement and Firearms Agency urged Gallaudet University to take down the surrounding fence to make more neighborly feeling within the increased generifited neighborhood lately after the addition of the Gallaudet-NY Ave Metrorail station.

Gallaudet University approached the DEA for hiring Gallaudet students for the internship. That's how the DEA and other community development people want to see Gallaudet take down the perimeter fence.

In reality, Gallaudet still face possible violent crimes against students, faculty members and personnels in this crime-ridden neighborhood area. The main campus is still surrounded within the low-income people and drug dealers.

Too many Gallaudet property stuff being stolen by outsiders.

I hope not that anyone will cut off the Gallaudet signs for collecting $$ for the metal scrap exchanges.

Everything point to I. King Jordan and his adminstration for lack of involvement with the community development, especially the H Street Revitalization Coaltion more than 15 years.

One adminstrative individual from the I. King Jordan adminstration, never showed up at the DC's community meeting regarding the H Street revitalization for about four years.

The surrounding neighborhood around Gallaudet constantly complained to me about Gallaudet's lack of efforts to get involved with the neighborhood issues and concerns back in 1990s.

Amen. This was a fantastic blog. And yet, many people think the ADA itself creates too many barriers. Odd, isn't it?

This critique of yours is really great. I like how you neatly question Paul Schwartzman's approach to the architecture and to deaf people. As you say, his writing is pretty good...he sensitively analyzes architectural design and likely made a lot of people think about a topic usually off the radar screen. By focusing on the wrong walls, however, he was inaccurate in characterizing the insularity's origin.
