Two things,

The man had hair in 1994 (albeit horrible looking hair that would warrant a kick in the knee cap)

The man has evolved since then.

Cozumel from what I hear is an American version of Mexico so you should be fine.

I guess if I went to Mexico, I wouldn't try to use my voice to speak Spanish. I would have carried around paper and pen to avoid incidents like you experienced, Chris. (Pointing at words in dictionary is also good.)

Hope you have gotten wiser and for your upcoming trip, you won't be so foolish to repeat your mistake?
Have fun! :-)

The Mexican Day of the Dead festivals (which take place during the first few days of November) have an interesting history. It's no coincidence that they take place around the same time as the Pagan celebration of Samhain, which also honors the dead and the passing on of our ancestors. Mexico has an interesting history of the intertwining of Christian (predominately Catholic) beliefs with ancient indigenous practices. One of my friends has an interesting collection of Day of the Deaf items, including statues, skulls, altar items, and some of those fascinating masks.

In any case, I do hope you have a great time on your vacation. But when it comes to visiting the bar, I would suggest it might be wise to let your wife order the drinks.
