I would have carried around paper and pen to avoid incidents like you experienced, Chris. (Pointing at words in dictionary is also good.) It's no coincidence that they take place around the same time as the Pagan celebration of Samhain, which also honors the dead and the passing on of our ancestors. Mexico has an interesting history of the intertwining of Christian (predominately Catholic) beliefs with ancient indigenous practices. One of my friends has an interesting collection of Day of the Deaf items, including statues, skulls, altar items, and some of those fascinating masks. In any case, I do hope you have a great time on your vacation. But when it comes to visiting the bar, I would suggest it might be wise to let your wife order the drinks.
