Dr. Michael Moore, a Chemistry professor, was appointed interim Provost today. The announcement came in a late-breaking e-mail from I. King Jordan today.
As for Dr. Moore, we both know him personally and know him to be respected and well-liked among his students, whose opinion may well be the most important right now. One thing Dr. King did not mention in describing Dr. Moore’s background, but we think is important to note is that he is currently an advisor for the SBG.
We wish him the best and we believe he’ll not only have good intentions in his new role, but he’ll be dedicated to carrying them out. The text of Dr. King’s memorandum is below.

MEMORANDUM
TO: Campus Community
FR: I. King Jordan
RE: Appointment of Interim Provost
I want to begin by thanking the Interim Provost Identification Committee for their invaluable assistance in selecting an interim provost and for their part in making it possible to have an interim provost in place very early in the fall semester.
I am pleased to inform you that I have appointed Dr. Michael Moore as interim provost. Dr. Moore was the candidate most highly recommended by the Committee and I concur with their recommendation. Key leaders in faculty governance also recommended Dr. Moore for the position. During my interview with Dr. Moore, I found him to have a strong and clear vision for moving Academic Affairs forward during the period of time until there is a person in the regular position. He has a commitment to begin by getting to know the perspectives and priorities of the entire Academic Affairs community, and for them to get to know him and his vision for Academic Affairs.
Dr. Moore has deep roots at Gallaudet. He is a professor in the Department of Chemistry and Physics and previously served as chair of the department. He also has been a long-standing contributor to faculty governance having served not only as a senator and on numerous faculty committees, but also as Chair of the University Faculty. He also chaired the committee that developed Gallaudet’s Credo, an important University document that identifies “core values that serve as guiding principles for the way members of the campus community teach, study, work and live.” Dr. Moore is an individual who personifies these values.
Dr. Moore will assume the position of interim provost as soon as we are able to assure appropriate coverage of the classes he is currently teaching. Dr. Fernandes and I commit our full support to Dr. Moore in his role as interim provost for Academic Affairs, which includes serving as a member of the President’s Council. Please join me in welcoming Dr. Moore to this position and supporting the work he will do to keep Academic Affairs focused on the future and the success of our students.

Wow! I had him as my chemistry professor when I was at Gally. The man is a GOOD teacher! They made a smart move by picking him.
An excellent choice! Now perhaps we can focus more on the primary purpose of Gallaudet: education which is to prepare students for a successful and fulfilling life.
Same here. He was my chem prof, too. One of the better I’ve had.
He taught the first class I ever visited at Gallaudet. I was greatly impressed. His human and professional qualities are towering. He is probably the best possible choice for interim provost. I wish him well!
The REAL nightmare come for the entire Gallaudet community.
No wonder you give Michael Moore the glowing review since you, Chris and Michael Moore are the fraternity brothers along with IKJ.
Michael Moore threatened numerous Gally male guys bolt from the Alpha Sigma Phi fraternity while he was an advisor to the very same fraternity.
IKJ did put the ASP flag above the American flag during his first four years of his Gally presidency.
Jason — It’d serve you well to read the whole post again. Starting with the byline. My wife and I wrote this, not just me. Last I checked this morning, my wife doesn’t possess male features, so there’s no way she can be an ASP member.
And, check out the comments. Other posters have commended Dr. Moore’s teaching leadership and his exemplary leadership. Dr. Moore was the chair of the Gallaudet Credo Committee and one of the finalists for the Dean of CLAST several years ago.
Being members of a specific greek organization have nothing to do with this whole selection process. The interim provost committee nominated Dr. Moore and President Jordan supported their nomination.
Next time you decide to bash Dr. Moore, provide specific details. Ad hominem attacks are unnecessary.
Exactly, Ad hominem attacks may also show insecurity issues as well.
FYI, I am not emotionally or intellectually insecure. You, McConnell, already show your own personal bias about Dr. Moore.
I have no grudges or problems with Dr, Moore, but find him real “moody” from time to time. He sometimes wave with forced smile.
I’ve addressed only in terms that Dr. Moore was a very good chemist professor I’ve had when I was a student in his chemistry class. Nothing more.
Chris, I already gave out the specific reasons why I have been uneasy about Dr. Moore being the interim provost.
Dr. Moore inexplicibly gave the former ASP member(s) real miserable time on the campus. The guys decide to resign from the ASP fraternity on voluntarly basis.
I witnessed the entire thing when several former ASP members accidently bumped into Dr. Moore. One of my friend really got scared and turned away. I asked that person what’s matter with Dr. Moore? I turned my head wayward and saw Dr. Moore’s angry eyes at my friend. I understood completely. I was told everything what really happened with my friend and Dr, Moore. Of course, I double-checked out everything to confirm whether my friend told the truth or not. My friend was telling the truth.
Dr. Moore should respect someone’s personal decision to resign from the ASP fraternity, not giving this individual any miserable time.
The common knowledge about Dr. Moore that he personally dislike JK. We would see the real leadership strife between Dr. Moore and JK in near future. We already know that IKJ is doing another “chessmate’ game on the Kendall Green for his own amusement.
The current interim provost is just a warm spit in the cup with the glass ceiling.
We ought to ask ourselves a real question WHY can’t the Gallaudet University simply choose the NEW provost, instead of just an interim provost?
I guess that IKJ want to give JK to imprint her own leadership mark on the university with the future hiring of provost. Will we face the same dilemma about the selection of new provost in the near future or what?
It looks like King retracted and wanted to pacify faculty by throwing in Michael Moore as interim provost. It also shows the power of the faculty! Not allowing a Fernandes clone to prevail might be the first major blow on the shrewed design of Kelleher for grabbing all power at Gallaudet.
Of course, the damages of the past 6 years cannot be fixed that easy and professor Moore will face towering mess Fernandes left behind as Provost. It is unjust to Michael to use him to clean up this mess. He is one of the most respected professors at the university, and he would deserve a better chance. He won’t be able to succeed until Fernandes stays President.
On the other hand, he may immediately trim the rambling rule of Karen Kimmel at the College of Sciences, even push her out of power. That could be a giant step to reduce Fernandes’ and her narrow clique’s incluence on acamemic matters, and ultimetely may pull the carpet from under her feet. So the battle is on! Keeping up the protest is more crucial now than ever!!
Jesus! Nothing makes you guys happy. I’m sure glad I’m not deaf. All you guys do is whine, whine, whine. The smartest deaf guy I know was an all american high school lacrosse player, has a 7 figure net worth, and he never set foot on Gallaudet. Or any other college.
Translation: gallaudet is like a community college for the deaf.
Dr. Michael Moore is a good man, period!
Does he still say “Hi” to you?
I seem have a second thoughts of Dr. Moore as the new interim provost. I embrace him to this rightful postiton.
I will apolgoize to Dr. Moore in person when I see him. He deserves much better from all of us.
