A friend sent me a link to a comic that I thought was hilarious. The comic’s author relates his experience at Tower A/Ellingson Hall at RIT. Absolutely hilarious, and the punch lines he raises are ones that we are all too familiar with. Speaking from the perspective of someone who went to RIT, he is SPOT ON and skewers deaf people nicely. He’d be a great person to write a Deaf Roast on Comedy Central.

I think it’s hilarious too. Obviously, things are taken to an extreme to be funny, but I agree, it’s spot on.
Hearing people are always shocked that us Deaf are always figuring out the acoustics of a room, so we can use it to the maximum for shouting, for music or for stomping our feet. *grins*
hilarious, and indeed spot on. I’ll be passing this around to my friends at RIT.
On the topic of acoustics — obligatory xkcd.
My favorite comment out of that thread so far:
“emarus 1 point 2 hours ago [-]
I got to RIT as well and there are a couple more things that I’d like to point out about the deaf and hard of hearing dorms:
1. There is a doorbell that if pressed activates an obnoxious strobe inside the room, a whole lot of fun when the occupant is not in the slightest way deaf.
2. Some deaf and hard of hearing people still talk when they’re signing, even though it sounds like mash potatoes and it’s really annoying.”
I **do** talk when I sign, sometimes…so instead of sounding like “dolphins clicking and squealing”, it’s “mashed potatoes,” according to emarus. I love dolphins, so I’ll stay with the clicking and squealing.
But otherwise, this cartoon gave me a sneak peek in the life of being in a deaf dorm. FUNNEEEEEE…
ahhh… those low-pitched screams in the halls brings back memories! You could actually feel them from 20 feet away!
Oh god.. flashbacks.. like a bad acid trip..
Wonder if they still have ASL floor at TA? :) Definitely brings back a lot of good memories…
You are a real hyprocrite yourself.
You gave me a dirty look at the McFinn pub. Why??
Not all deaf person make a loud moan during sex!
You really think this is funny? It makes deaf people look like total animals.
I think we should be able to laugh at ourselves sometimes. After all, we’re not perfect.
When I was at RIT, I lived in the on-campus apartments, and I had two roommates - one deaf and white, the other was hard of hearing and black.
Next door were 3 hearing blonde women, and one night they decided to blast some loud, bass-heavy music with repetitive rhythm… so our apartment was thumping rhythmically from their music.
My black roomie came downstairs, stared at the wall adjoining their apartment, then turned to me and my other roomie and said, ‘I think they’re trying to be black!’
She said it in jest, and since I was really good friends with her and knew she wouldn’t take offense, I laughed along with her. My white roomie, on the other hand, just stared at her in shock.
And if you want to know the rest of the story, after three straight hours of blaring music that was shaking our apartment, we called Campus Safety and complained about the loud music… they came and talked with the 3 blondes next door. Then CS came over to us and said, ‘They’ll be quiet now. They said they were moving their furniture, but they’ll stop now.’
?! Dude.. EVEN Deaf people can tell the difference between loud, obnoxious music and people moving the furniture!
I likewise did not think that the comic was funny but then, if my blood were tested for humor-ol, I would be placed on a special diet for more nutrients in humor. :-) I do find several panels very funny though. The art in the fourth panel where the girl surrounded by vibrations seems to be at peace is really very good. The panel about airlock is so right on.
There is a bit of truth in the comic. There are some or few Deaf people who are very inconsiderate of the hearing people’s needs. I detest their use of Deaf culture as a justification for their behaviors. No, it is not. They really need to learn M-A-N-N-E-R-S!
I read the other comics at Dustinland and I have to say that some of them are really weird.

I thot this comic was Hilarious!
Its nice to be able to laugh at ones self…deaf or not. Sure brings back memories of Gally dorms when I first arrived. Lights flashing and the screams…oh god! Sounded like someone was being killed….ah!
So I can understand this hearie having NO clue to living with deaf people.
ROTFLVH! Hilarious! Vikee, I had been there, too. LOL.
There is no place like any “deaf” dorm.
wow! I’m currently at Gally and I sometimes face this problem too: my roomie tends to show up in middle of morning and crash, hence the need to have flashing lights incorporated into my dreams. :P But seriously, I always wondered about CODAs and those hearing peeps feel about Deaf having sex or whatever…spill the beans!! The more the merrier we all can enjoy our antics. :D
correction! I meant how do y’all get around to hearing such noises and face the dilemma? Any other “interpretation” of what it sounds like??
My bro told me when we were younger and was in college. He had an opportunity to date a deaf girl. When i teased him about that, he laughed but made a comment that got me….he asked me if deaf girls tend to be quiet when having sex.
I laughed and said, stop by and listen to me and my ex hubby. He declined HA!
You *true biz* offered your bro to listen to his sister having sex? Wow - I’d go ballistic, that’s for sure :)
True biz, a hearie asked me if any deaf could romanticise and have sex and make babies. I roared with laughter and asked her if she had forgotten that I was born to the deaf parents.
“But,” she continued, “but how do they say, ‘I love you,’ in the dark bedroom, with all lights out.” LOL
I DO know my brother better than that. I knew he would turn me down LOLOLOLOL!!!
Whatcha think I am…sick? :-)
Not sick, but perhaps a bit perverted. Hey, to each his, or in this case, HER own.
I thought the comic was funny…especially about the big bad black guy beating up a white doped out guy. Shades of a reverse Jena-Six, anyone?
RIT had some the easiest girls I’ve ever had. I could imagine dipping my wick, and not even know her name. But it was “all in a day’s work” at RIT.
