Opinions vary. The kit lens is mediocre, but is good to practice on. So if body-only vs with kit lens price isn't much different, get the kit lens to practice on.

The 30mm lens I bought is almost $400 and is pretty versatile. It is what photographers call a "prime" lens, fixed at a certain zoom level without any functionality to zoom back and forth. Zoom = your body moving around.

If money is not an object, get a real Canon "L" lens ($1k or above). They are excellent lenses and hold their value (ie you can sell for about the same price as you buy them).

Ah it's already on flickr, but I tend to keep my pictures friends-only. DCist is a good idea. Why not.

I use a <a href="http://www.usa.canon.com/consumer/controller?act=ModelInfoAct&fcategoryid=139&modelid=14256" rel="nofollow">Canon Rebel Xti</a> (aka 400D or Kiss X in other countries). It's mated with a Sigma 30mm lens rather than the kit lens.
