On a lighter note, Chesapeake Bay and recycling aside, check out 5thape’s post about flirting with deaf girls. We rarely hear about the “hearing perspective” of their everyday interactions with us. I think he brings up few very interesting points about the aesthetics of writing back and forth with a deaf person.
What do you think? Do YOU ever notice the things that he notices? Dirty hands? Unmanicured fingernails?
Another interesting thing to think about is the fact that, unlike the stereotype, he wasn’t repulsed and turned off by meeting a deaf person. Maybe the next time you communicate with that cute girl or guy via pen or pseduo-sign language, his or her’s awkwardness may in fact be due to him/her actually liking you…
So, maybe a lot of the awkwardness that we encounter out in the wild is actually due to their own thoughts about themselves; how they are presenting themselves and communicating with you. Not that they’re annoyed or put off by you.

I think as a visual person I do notice things more than my hearing counterpart would. Like I do notice all those things, the dirty hands, the way the guy is dressed. It may make me seem like I’m a superficial person, but appearance does make an impression.
I agree with Erin.
It takes 3 seconds for a guy to know if he’s attracted to a girl, so appearance and presentation are very important in most situations.
Don’t fret… just because someone rejects a person because of his/her deafness does not mean that there aren’t others out there that are not bothered by it. There was this episode once on Jerry Seinfeld Show when Jerry dates a deaf girl so it’s not at all taboo.
Personally, I have dated several hearing girls without any problems. More than 85% said it was no big deal I couldn’t hear even though they had to adjust initially.
Hm - What about the other way around? deaf guys flirting with hearing? Tim brings up an interesting point: I had no problems dating or meeting hearing girls when it’s easy to meet them like at a wedding or a casual dinner party but bars and coffee shops are another story. Then again, it may be like everyone else - we guys get awkward at these things just like hearing guys :-)
Well, when I read about these posts about hearing guys flirting with Deaf chicks.. I just had to smirk and roll my eyes.
A large percentage of hearing guys who want to learn ASL or date a Deaf gal, it’s one thing on their mind.
Why is it so easy?
Okay, okay.. Fine! I’ll paint a pretty picture for hearing men!
Actually it is the GUY’s nails not the deaf girl’s nails.
i do notice my hearing boyfreinds, um, flaws, but i love him all the more. like he has chewed nails and messy hair……urg..
HONESTY IS THE BEST POLICY! I AM PROUD TO BE DEAF! :)
