During lunch recently, I saw a guy with a T-shirt that proclaimed:

"Fuck Everybody"

I guess that shirt sums up Allison's point pretty well.

This has got me thinking. Human beings have to make a million decisions a day, so categories, classifications, stereotypes, etc., seem to, at least, give us a starting point from which to make some of those decisions - especially when they have to be made in a split-second.

Still, alienation sucks. No one will ever truly know who we are - and by 'we' I mean everyone, not just deaf people. Heck, I have trouble knowing who I am sometimes! Time (aka experience) helps ...

Then stop being submissive, honey. Do what I do: I tell people I don't lip read (even though I can catch a word or a phrase here and there), and I speak with my hands (after all, why should hearing people have monopoly on that word "speaking"? We speak too!).

And guess what? Hearing people almost always say, "Oh. Okay." Then they proceed to write or work harder to communicate with me. :-)
