Hi. I took the GRE two days ago and I also had an interesting experience with their disability services office. I am hearing but I have a motor disability that makes it very difficult for me to use a computer mouse.

As I'm sure you know, the GRE is on computer and all the multiple choice questions have to be clicked with the mouse. (It would not be very hard programming to make that possible to do with a keyboard, but the programmers don't seem to realize that keyboards are often much easier to use than mouses for people with motor disabilities.)

I called their office and asked how I could get an accomadation like a paper test. They said that I would have to get a doctor's note and fill out paperwork. A committee would review my request and after six months (!) they would let me know if it was approved.

My graduate school apps are due long before six months are up, so I had to just sign up and take it with the mouse, which was difficult. (I clicked it by holding a pencil in my hand over the mouse.)

Why are these organizations that purport to be so disability friendly actually so ignorant?

PS I really enjoy your blog!

Good post- I can relate... my mom is deaf and my friends ALWAYS ask stupid questions! Can she drive? Well yah, why would she need to hear to drive... well horns of course they say. My response: after people honk they sign too- with their finger.
Of course my other pet peeve is laziness from hearing people!(of which I am one) People who wouldn't write down the total for my mom, trying, instead to get me, a 5 year old to interpret. Believe me, I know not to interpret for my mom now!!!
Anyway, thanks for the great post, nice to know everyone is really that dumb about deaf people... THINK A LITTLE, eh?!
