I’ve been on a Marlee Matlin kick lately, digging up videos of her on YouTube. She’s an extraordinarily beautiful and talented actress who has gone farther than any other deaf person in Hollywood. Sure, she’s gotten criticism for speaking on occassion, but hey, I think we can get all past that now in the great spirit of Deafhood, can’t we?
Here’s a few for your viewing pleasure, courtesy of YouTube goodness:
Marlee Matlin wins the 1986 Academy Award for Best Actress. This is actually the first time I’ve seen this clip…I was just five years old when that happened. Just a tadpole, really. I must point out two funny things in this video. Her outfit is hideous even by 80s standards, and look at her walk as she approaches the stage. Such a “deaf” walk! She was just 21 when she won, so it’s all forgivable.
Marlee Matlin in an Apple Macintosh commercial. I totally prefer this over that dumb Bayer commercial with that deaf woman in it. Don’t get me wrong; the deaf actress was great–the commercial was just dumb. Now I can’t get it out of my head. “The Power of Bayer!”
Marlee Matlin speaks at some school. Fans go wild.
The teaser for the next season of The L Word guest-starring Marlee Matlin.
The trailer for What The Bleep Do We Know? one of the weirdest movies I’ve ever seen. How’d Marlee sign up for that project? Well, any exposure is good exposure.

Ah…well, my wife has been a classmate and friend of Marlee at Hersey high school near Chicago. She still gets goose bumps watching Marlee on tv.
I give Marlee a lot of credit for the career she has made for herself while raising four kids– cheers to her!
I agree. She’s an amazing woman with a mind of her own! I only wish there were some way to bring her to DC and have her be my date to DPHH! :)
Wow! Thanks Adam for sharing the film links with us, by the way, you mentioned something about “deaf walk”, that was interesting. When you mean “deaf walk”, does that mean this deaf person walks loudly or does not pick up their feet when walking??
i dunno if it’s a “deaf” walk, but to me she bobbed up the stairs like a tired person on the way to bed.
Jesus! Are you so fake that you’re now discriminating on how people walk? Lord, take mercy on your children of a lesser God, whom you have seen fit to exclude from the world of sound so that they can learn important lessons about living. Someday, you’ll get through to ‘em, Lord. Pass the loot!
I liked “what the bleep do we know?” When it came out on DVD I was surprised to see Marlee in it as I had low opinion of her at the time. Overall, I became impressed with her performance and I think she had a recurring role on “west wing” around the same time. She did well in it too..
I was 10 when Marlee won the Oscar - the next morning my speech therapist and teacher for the HI provided cut out article of Marlee winning the award. But it was mainly about her acceptance speech using both voice and sign. The teachers emphasized that if she could do it, so can we. We were initially freaked at the idea of giving a speech to a large audience full of hearing people and live TV. Imagine the pysche on a group of 7-11 years old.
I met Marlee when I was at Deaf West’s Summer Theatre Program. She was very down-to-earth and easy to talk with. That whole fiasco about her using her voice at the Oscars really hurt her. She had MEANT to speak AND sign her acceptance speech. However, when she got up on the stage and saw all these people, she FORGOT to sign. Needless to say, we as a Deaf Community failed her by giving her backlash that she did not deserve.
I love her! I watched that show in the late 80’s with her and Mark Harmon. That was my first Marlee watching. I love Children of a Lesser God too! That play has come to my state and I might be seeing it. I am looking forward to it!!
