Well, a new academic year begins brightly on Kendall Green. Freshmen stand around the circle in front of Benson Hall, looking for rides, while graduate students swarm into their labs in the Hall Memorial Building. In many aspects, it is just another fall semester, with the usual cheerful atmosphere of high spirits and far-reaching hopes.
But there’s, of course, that proverbial elephant in the room.
As hard as it may be to ignore it, there has not been much of a peep (or whimper) coming from the groups who led the protest against Dr. Jane Fernandes’ selection as Gallaudet’s next president. Where is this apocalyptic protest that members of the FSSA group claimed would come roaring back as soon as school was back in session?
Just you wait, some say. It’ll happen this week, soothsayers portend. Homecoming. It’ll be big, with alumni involved. Just you wait, others warn.

The spirit of the Deaf President Now movement of 1988 is under restoration. Is have been revealed that I. King Jordan, current Gallaudet president and his camp hijacked the movement and sold out its original goals and ideas for personal gain. They caused tremendous damage to the Deaf community and to the school itself. Gallaudet is now under federal scrunity for its failing performance in the education of the Deaf.
The May protest by its wonderful design brought out the truth that cannot be forced back to silence anymore. It is just a matter of time that the reckless heritage of these traitors will be swept away by public uproar and well orchestrated grassroot actions, while the original spirit of DPN will be restored in full glory.
Once again… wild conjectures, spectulations, theories… but no proof. Deaf people are the only disabled minority that discriminate against their own kind, why is that? Oh yeah, I forgot. Your intentional segregration has completed disconnected you from the world and substantially dropped your IQ’s as well. Don’t worry, your next SSDI check is right around the corner.
Well, what about the PART report which the author of that comment is referring to? Gallaudet as a government-funded organization IS under national review and HAS failed its last assessment under the guidance of Fernandes; nobody’s ever adequately explained that. (Fernandes’ own response is “They were looking at the wrong papers!” which sounds suspiciously like Bush saying “They don’t report the good news about Iraq!”)

Yes, Joseph, it looks like Gallaudet will be forced to cut some of its basic service programs because of reduced federal funding. Oh, boy, and it is just the beginning. The PART story is not over yet, not by many many miles! At the end of that story we’ll see the lagacy of King Jordan, what he did to the Deaf in its true color.
Of course, the countless Gallaudet students who felt no obligation to study hard or work hard to improve themselves play no “part” in this. It’s always someones elses fault…
Disabled means “physically or mentally impaired in a way that substantially limits activity especially in relation to employment or education”. I believe this adequately describes deaf people, especially the employment bit. We all know about the education bit, Einstein. Just the other day, we were talking in the elevator about this deaf girl who works in the building. All she does is mess up, mess up, screw up, mess up, screw up, and mess up, and then look for someone to blame or something to make an excuse with. “Why is she so fake”, was the question. I had no answer for it. Jane doesn’t say hi?

I would be surprized if the next appropriation would be above $100 million as requested. Funding usually goes up and down with fluctuation, but it may drop significantly as we will learn it in February 2007. I don’t claim the rank of a prophet, but watch programs and staff being reduced at in the next few years, because od\f inadequate funding.
Hello, Gallaudet would survive without Federal Funding. It has been preparing for the day when the Feds would cut off the support. What about ourselves? Who can do without their SSI or SSDI checks? I can honestly say I have tried to get the SSI support, but was rejected. I been working a regular job since I graduated from high school. Can anyone say the same? Hard work in school and on the job is the only way to getting rid of the label “disable.”

I like to correct the fact about the FSSA and other Gally protestors engage in the ongoing protest about the QUESTIONABLE search process and selection of new university president. NOTHING TO DO WITH FERNANDES’s EDUCATIONAL BACKGROUND AND CULTURAL QUALIFICATIONS.

Guess what? I am already on the Non Persona Grata (NPG) for being wrongfully accused of “B.O.T.L” - Be on the Outlook. Why would I be on the outlook last Friday night watching the new freshman talent show at the Ely Theatre?
I was supposed to meet my good friends (three of them) at the Ely Auditorium after the film showing of “The Shaggy Dog”, 2006 version. I came in pretty early. Guess what?
I was cornered by the DPS officers and told me that I was not supposed to be on the campus. I said “What?” “What I have done anything wrong?” The DPS officers begged me to get in the patrol car in front of my good friend (one of them).
I was urged to give my residence address and let me go.
I realized that I was really targeted by the Gallaudet adminstration for spending some time with Brian Riley over the summertime.
Many people told me that IKJ feared most was the very public protest outside the Gally protest like go marching to the U.S. Captiol and other activities.
IKJ want to keep his image from being tattered.
I went to the Kendall Green last Friday evening without any problem. I watched the entire talent show by the new Freshman students with positive attitude. I actually enjoyed the show so far. The show organizer - the campus staff overlooked one freshman student which he was supposed to be on the stage to showcase his talent. I simply told him “Be assertive. Go to the show planner.” That freshman student did stand up and go to the side of stage and spoke with the campus staff.
Before the talent show, many freshman students came to me and quipped their excitement about the upcoming protest. One of them were my former Gally roomate returning for complete his studies. I advised several freshman students please be real careful what you say anything about the protest to your professors or your grade could be greatly affected. They nodded in agreement with me. I also mentioned “If any professor ask you about the protest. Simply say I am not coming here to talk about protest. I come here for an education. So the professors could not be more inquistive whose side you are with”.
I was skeptical about the adminstration’s tactics in silencing the protestors til I tasted the experience myself. I was really shocked about the whole thing happened to me.
Guess what? I get more determined and radicalized about the protest than ever.
Didn’t you know that IKJ and JK’s residence only distanced by 9 miles? Is that concidence? I do not think so! I already went to both residences to see for myself with someone.
Have you, McConnell seen the Gally convocation video attachment for new freshman? You could see why Fernandes is very inept with her speaking qualities and choice of word. She seems dumb-down her speech for freshman students. Why??
I met alot of new freshman students, who are very knowledgeable and wordly than others would give them any credits.
I have nothing personal against Fernandes and I. King Jordan in any way. Many people and I are still puzzled why IKJ get so defensive about the protest against JK.

And I mean nothing absurd such as her saying that all deaf people should be shot, or being charged with murder, indecent exposure, sexual harrassment, and the like. Excluding philsophical disagreements and within reasonable bounds, what WOULD make you say she is not the right person for the job?
If she is obviously and completely incompetent as an administrator in front of everybody else to see. If this was the case, then everybody on campus would see this and revolt against her. However, that is not the case. Not on the scale as DPN 1988.
For the pessimists, I ask them, list all major and positive accomplishments that JKF have done for Gallaudet University.
Yeah, that’s obvious- but I was asking what kind of evidence you’d accept as indisputable.. things aren’t always black and white. besides those in power (i’m speaking of anywhere) have control over information, making it difficult to have “indisputable” evidence against them barring a serious leakage. nevertheless there’s plenty of reasons to believe JK didn’t get chosen based on merit. i’ve been thinking abt guest-blogging about it soon seeing that nobody from fssa has stepped up to communicate with the public lately.
Go ahead and start blogging. More the voice and perspective, the better everybody can see. However, having said that, I don’t care for ad hominem attacks. I, and others, want to see a reasoned response with as much facts as possible and none of the conjectures, conspiracy theories about IKJ’s supposedly Freudian slip, and so on.
The onus is on people who are making the charges against IKJ and/or JKF to find facts to their claims. Saying that she’s “eeeevil” doesn’t help at all.

Washington, DC itself is only coveres 10 square miles so anyone who lives in Washington, DC is going to be within 10 miles of each other. So I live across the street from Gallaudet myself, I can see House One from my living room window, but believe me Im not meeting up with the President in dark alleys in NE sharing secrets and I doubt they are either. Why go through all that troubl they can meet on campus in a nice plush office anytime they want!

I gave private lessons to Keifer Sutherland and now he’s the master at it. Seen “24″ lately? Did you know that Lyndon Baines Johnson (LBJ) purposefully buy the house near J. Edgar Hoover? So he could claw into Hoover for such inside information on the opponents and other people. So you wonder how LBJ became the youngest Majority Leader! In the end, LBJ returned the favor to Hoover by keeping him as the FBI director against the growing complaints about his inability to fight against the Mob crimes and extreme investigation into citizens’ private life. The proof is in government files: Gallaudet became ineffective under Kelleher.
Another link to understand Kelleher’s true face is the Dean of the College of Sciences, whom she sneakily appointed during the Summer recess in 2004, Karen Kimmel. Therefore Kelleher is totally responsible for the behavior and malfeasance of Kimmel, who is in fact her alterego.
Kimmel just wreaked havoc at the College of Sciences by threatening service programs with elimination. She is especially fond of threatening those staff and untenured faculty whom she suspects with participation in the protest. Her xenophobic hatred toward people who think differently is well demonstrated by her actions. (I heard there is a Black Log on Kimmel’s activity as Dean maintained by well respected elder faculty.)

No. When Hillary Clinton became Hillary Rodham Clinton by her own will, she revealed her intention to be called like that. The same goes with Kelleher, and we should respect her intention to use her middle name as identification. Anyway, George W. Bush also has a “maiden name”: W. ;)

1. No one calls Hillary “Rodham.” It’s either “Senator Clinton” or “Hillary Rodham Clinton” or some combination thereof. I have never, never heard of anyone calling her plain ol’ “Rodham.”
2. Has Dr. Fernandes revealed her intention to be called “Jane Kelleher Fernandes?” I’ve seen this used only on a few occassions, and they were all to formally announce her as president or some other similar topic. Did she come out one day and say, “Hey, call me Jane Kelleher Fernandes?” The closest that I can tell is that she is commonly called “Jane K. Fernandes.”
3. It’s cute that people call Bush “W.” It’s not cute calling Fernandes “Kelleher.” It looks like a goofy mistake. You could call her “K” but then it wouldn’t really work, would it?

I agree with Adam. There is a name association already at work. Not alot of people know what the “K” stands for. What’s more, if you keep using the full middle name instead of an already recognized name Jane K. Fernandes, many people may not realize that you’re talking about the same person. “Kelleher” doesn’t jump out but “Jane K. Fernandes” does. Besides, “Jane K. Fernandes” is her professional name.
Mind you she visited back to Hawaii to make people celebrate her as “our little Kelleher”? She obviously likes to be called Kelleher. So be it.

Your irony is so childish that it is not even funny. King Jordan hijacked the DPN in 1988 for personal gain and brought down Gallaudet into shame. Federal assessors scrutinize the school for failing to educate Deaf student, which is required by the Law. Congress has serious doubts now if this system of Deaf higher education works at all. Such a humiliation has never happened to Gallaudet before.
Now, the same King Jordan wants to pass the presidency as if heritage to Jane Kelleher, so that she keeps the status quo. This outrageous indecency is the reason behind the protest, that placed Gallaudet on a list of failing institutes and the Deaf on the list of endangered species.

Raise the SAT scores as one of the core requirement to get into Gallaudet. Another thing, is it Gallaudet’s sole duty to make it up to incoming freshmen their failings of 12 - 15 years of schooling (elem - high school)? Perhaps it’s time to ban any night time partying during the school week and on weekends so they can study some more? It’s the students’ sole responsibility to ensure that they do the hard work and get good grades. After all, they are not little kiddies anymore where they need to be spoon fed…or do they?
You contradict yourself… You said Lets raise the SAT scores for requirement purposes and then you say its Gallaudets responsibility to make up for 12-15 years of failed schooling. If Gallaudet requires SAT scores to enter then obviously only those students who have achieved a great education would get in and therefore Gallaudet would not be doing any “making up” for 12-15 years of bad education as those students wont be able to get in.

Since the three of us need an overview, do feel free to give us one. While the three of us may sometimes disagree on points I think for the most part we tend to agree more often than not with each other and I dont see any bickering other than your comment!

As for “big words,” this is how many of us think and write. I suppose dumbing-down is what you want? And for the record, I haven’t seen any “big words,” but that’s from my own perspective here.

Does this mean all the worthless, shifty Gallaudet graduates from 1988 to 2006 will give back what is essentially a worthless diploma? Because if you’re not being educated, courtesy of some secret plot, that does make your diploma worthless. So it seems. Let’s see if I can work this logic out:
1: I. King takes over in 88 for his own personal gain resulting in an ineffective rating some years down the line
2: All schools with an ineffective rating are giving ineffective educations
C: therefore, anyone with a Gallaudet diploma is ineffective… from 1988 to 2006, of course.
Just because the school might be rated “ineffective” does not mean all of the programs are ineffective. I just earned my B.A. in Secondary Education and History this past May ‘06 and I dont believe my Gallaudet Education is worthless.
Education is what we make it and students have a huge responsibility in our own education the same goes for the Deaf we have a responsibility in all of this and its time we stop placing blame and step to the plate and accept our own responsibilities in regards to our own education and focus in life.
So no, my Gallaudet diploma is not ineffective in fact the name Gallaudet inspite the protest still opens many doors the world over and for that im Thankful!

I already have been to the St. Elizabeth campus how beautiful it was! Many people seen the unfettered view of DC from the bird view on the St. Elizabeth campus ground.
Too bad, the St. Elizabeth will be no longer the institution as we know of. It will be probably turned into the Department of Homeland Security Headquarter.

I did not have any chance of accessing to the Internet to make the following responses.
One individual and I just done the background investigations on the so-called rumors and speculations about IKJ and JK. I wanted to know what and how Jane Kelleher rose from Worcester to the Gally presidency. We really don’t done any stalkings at all. We were bound to the legitimate tasks like following the journalistic ethics or will be discredited if we compromise on anything.
The following articles on IKJ and JK’s personal backgrounds will be coming real soon. There will be the videocasts and photos of Kellher’s family member(s), IKJ’s vacation house to quell the past rumors about his 4 million dollars embezzelments. Same thing with JK’s residence reflecting the personality of the new Gallaudet president who and what JK really is all about.
No hatch jobs on IKJ and JK! Just do the objective reportings with all honesty and credibility. So people would know the whole truth from any distorted rumors and unproved speculations.
Protestors might hate me for being truthful on IKJ and JK. The Gallaudet adminstration might hate me for exposing the existence of painful truths about both people.
Any investigative reporters have to do some grunging tasks without background investigations.
