So I’m off to a beachfront condo rental in Ocean City, Delaware for the weekend. As a kid who grew up one mile from the Pacific Ocean all his life, I’m very excited to see what the other coast has to offer. I hear it’s full of nonexistent waves, warm ocean water, something called a “boardwalk,” and fat food and people galore.
I can’t wait. It’ll be my first time–ever–frolicking in the Atlantic Ocean. But people have already scoffed at my choice of weekend getaway. “It’s so touristy,” one person said. Well, I’m technically a tourist, aren’t I?
Someone else said, “Virginia Beach is much better than Ocean City. Don’t even ask.” Ok, I won’t.
I’m going to have fun in Ocean City anyway, no matter what. Rehoboth Beach and the blackjack tables at Atlantic City are on my list for later this summer, too. What are your recommendations for great weekend trips when you need to get out of the Beltway?

Next time you’re out on the left coast, try something called a “boardwalk” up at Santa Cruz. Northern California isn’t all hippies and granola, contrary to stereotypes. ;)
Fat food? Perhaps you meant fast food? Or fat people in Speedos galore? :)
Should be in Rehoboth Beach since it fits in who you are.

am I missing something? I looked up Rehoboth Beach, it seems like a perfectly normal beach to me.

Ridor is probably referring to a gay mecca in Rehoboth Beach. It’s suppposed to be cosmpolitan compared to, say, Ocean City. Miles of boardwalk and white powder sand.
I always knew the seashells were a bit queer in Rehoboth Beach. And the sand flutters a bit funny when it gets windy there. Definitely not a normal beach, nosiree Bob.
No worries. I’m off to Rehoboth later this summer (I think). Hooray for beach diversity!
Rehoboth Beach is the American Flag Speedo capital of the world. Gotta love that.
Number one on my getaway list is OCEAN CITY! Where else?
My husband and I really enjoy driving out to Wincester and exploring all the little towns alongside Route 87 in western Virginia (never to be confused with West Virginia). One of our favorites is Front Royal; their downtown is quaint and there are several wineries within short driving distances.
Or if you’re just not into the natural scene, then do consider Annapolis. Just a short forty-five minutes from DC, this city is often overlooked even by locals. They’ve got great restaurants and the occasional event (such as First Night).
Driving drunk? Tsk tsk.

A good beach for faggies like me is Fire Island, located just off Long Island. No cars are allowed onto the island, you need to take a ferry and it is recommended you bring or rent a bike.
Yeah, loved Fire Island. I was fortunate to have a friend who owns a home in The Pines. You heard the stories about these houses — it is true.

Let me make the factual correction for you, Adam! Ocean City is in Maryland. You ought to take the trip to see the island off Maryland and Delaware mainland to watch the wild horses tripping around. I could not remember the name of that island begin with Acberequeyele (whatever it spells out).
Rehoboth Beach, DE is much improved in past five years. Lewes (DE) is one of best-kept secret in the touristy area next to Rehoboth Beach.
Atlantic City, NJ is yeech with pathetic boardwalk area with no wortwhile shopping venue.
Southern New Jersey area like Wildwood and Cape May area are “must-visit”, especially Cape May. Ferry trips from Lewes to Cape May - appx. one hour with alot of breezy air.
I used to be a beach bum myself for appx. one year in Southern New Jersey pretty long time ago (Reagan era).
