How true about the so-called exclusivity of deaf people from the worship services across America!

I will print your comment, then send out it to my father. He always pester me for going to the church. My father know that I am a lifetime atheist!

Wait a minute - has anyone seen "Animal House"? It epitomized the rowdy and bawdy culture of colleges and universities - a place where 18-23 years old experience their newfound independence by experimenting with sex, drugs, life, whatever. There are hundreds of state universities who have created have famous reputations as "party schools" - having legendary parties and there are many students who terrorizes others for frivolous reasons. It's very common and I hope you already know that. And, most importantly, all of these has nothing to do with their race, gender, or in this case, disability. So, stop generalizing this to just deaf people. I'm Catholic myself, but we don't need your holier-than-thou crap.

though I'm not a church-goer myself definitely never was a Christian, you do raise some good points. Can't say I agree 100% but admire your input. But want to comment just one thing here---

"Let’s not forget that once many students go to Gally, they would throw their values out of the window & get involved in a lot of sins such as sexual immortality of all sorts, betrayal, excessive pride, mistreatment"

you spelled "immortality" and I know you mean "immorality" not "immortality" I don't criticize over spelling but I had to LAUGH cuz if it's sexual immortality, then it must have been a "prolonged orgiastic ecastsy" forgive me if I'm joking here nothing personal to target you (grins)

I've been reading the blogs (www.deafdc.com, elisa's and rido'rs faithfully) and found the postings of comments very instructive however contrasting (it pays to keep an open mind and think globally). Let's suppose Ron Stern gets the provost job and what if JF decides to delegate whatever duties to drown Ron that way. I'm not saying this for a fact, just wondering.

Yes, some deaf students are bitter.
College is a time of a lot of transitions, when you're 18 you're still a cynical teenager, and by the time you are 22+ you have changed considerably in maturity. Research shows that peoples brains don't finish developing until age 25.

The fact is that college students and young adults tend not to be very religious-- people come back to religion around age 30 as they prepare to raise their own kids and realize they need God's help.

So to look at college students and judge quickly they'll always be like that is to jump to conclusions.

Also, you cannot judge the burdens a person has by their faces at all. Some deaf people come to Gallaudet with the most horrific life stories I've ever heard. They're not bitter because they're deaf. They're bitter because they're depressed, have PTSD, and have life stresses few outsiders can understand.

I remember I was talking to a priest once when I was 17 I said I wanted to stop going to church. He said "I don't think I was attending church at age 17 as regularly as you are."

Most deaf people are barred from full participation in religion because of no interpreters, no interest in mission outreach in their area.

Believe me, I watched my hearing siblings go to church youth groups, habitat for humanity, and so on all through the church who had such great teen ministry, they were having meetings at our house too.

Did one person there at that church know sign other than siblings? Or be interested in inviting me too? NOT ONE. So much for the church showing God's love to all. You can't expect deaf people to go knocking down doors and saying "help me, my spirit is poor, I'm depressed, and nobody loves me, I need you."

You have to go and include them. If hearing people don't understand why deaf people might be bitter, then they need to think when was the last time they included deaf people in anything.

Churches are not covered by the ADA. To this day, America is very segregated when it worships. Black to black churches, Cantonese and Koreans to their churches, and deaf to their churches if they can find any.

And that "religion" in other countries is a laugh. If deaf people know religion it's only because churches helped set up their deaf schools. Otherwise they can expect zilch education on God and religion even from their family's own church.

That's absolutely right. We're stupid, naive and we would've not even protested if it was for Lynn Jacobiwitz and Dr. Zoltan!

PLEASE.

We are grown adults, and we know what we think and why.

There's no reason to treat us like children who don't know what they are doing.
