A student protest has unfolded this afternoon at Gallaudet University following the selection of their Provost as the next President to succeed I. King Jordan in December 2006.

Immediately after the announcement of Dr. Jane Fernandes’s selection as Gallaudet’s next president, Ryan Commerson, an outspoken Gallaudet alumnus, attempted to disrupt the event and was thrown out of the auditorium by two security personnel.

Many people left the auditorium in a state of shock. While the appointment of Dr. Fernandes was seen as a somewhat foregone conclusion given the strict qualifications (all of which Dr. Fernandes clearly met and exceeded), many had hoped that it would be somebody else.

A platform was quickly set up on Kendall Green where Student Body Government President Noah Beckham served as a homing beacon for approximately 200-300 students to gather. Once a sufficiently large group had been assembled, Beckham and others told them to head towards the main entrance/front gates on Florida Avenue and 8th St NE.

The main entrance was immediately blocked off by approximately 200 students. Signs were quickly drawn up that said, “Better President Now!” “Jane Fernandes Not Accept!” “No JK!” (Jane Fernandes’s sign name is “J.K.”)

Various student leaders, including Anthony Mowl, Tawny Holmes, and Ryan Commerson (speaking from outside the Gallaudet boundaries) expressed their deep displeasure at Dr. Fernandes’s selection, and coined the overarching slogan of this small protest, “Jane Fernandes Is Not Acceptable!”

In ASL, it is signed as, “J. K. Not Accept!”

Dr. Jane K. Fernandes has the unfortunate position of being both the most qualified candidate (as determined by the Board of Trustees) and the most divisive candidate (as determined by the student body).

Police vehicles are now lined up along Florida Avenue ostensibly keeping the students from spilling out into the streets, and news media (such as this Wash. Post article) are surely on their way.

As of post time, the protest continues at Gallaudet University’s front gates. There are no clear signs of what will happen next. It appears disorganized as the student leaders figure out who really are the leaders and decide on a plan.
