One of my favorite words in the English language is “abortive.” I am glad to have this opportunity to use that word to describe the 200-strong student protest that occured following Dr. Jane Fernandes’s selection as Gallaudet’s next president. The protest may look like it’s still going on, but it’s really over.

A deaf protest against a deaf person. And what for? For being cold? Disagreeable? Unfriendly? Inhospitable? Making unpopular, but necessary decisions as Provost?

But never mind that. The protest succeeded. Yes, you heard me right. The students WON. According to Student Body Goverment (SBG) Public Relations Ryan DiGiovanni, the sole demand coming from the protest was “to know why the Board of Trustees chose Dr. Fernandes. We want to understand why.”

Well, the Board capitulated. They granted SBG President Noah Beckham and Graduate Student Association (GSA) President Alex Zernovoj extended time to speak with the Board at their meeting next Thursday, May 11th. Presumably the meeting will allow these two men to understand the Board’s reasons (as obvious as they may be) for picking Dr. Fernandes, and relay that message back to the student body.

So, the students won. Of course, after Beckham and Zernovoj made the announcement to the 200-odd students assembled at the front gates, they students quickly devolved into chants of “Now! Now! Now!” Today is the last day of classes after all; by next Thursday, the campus is virtually deserted for the summer.

But fear not, Beckham has vowed to wage the battle. “This is war. A long war.” May I roll my eyes now?

What ultimately killed this protest (it may be still going on now, but it’s effectively stillborn) was a lack of agreement on the message. Was it to get rid of Jane? Install Ron? Redo the process? Nobody could agree. And both GSA and SBG also realized that 200 students do not represent 1,200 students. And - go figure. Maybe the real issue was that they didn’t have a real issue to stand on. A bunch of bad encounters with the Provost is not a disqualification.

In fact, the Board of Trustees has been remarkably cooperative with the needs of the Gallaudet community throughout the entire process. The search committee included student representatives and appeared to be a diverse group. Unprecedented open forums and discussions were held for all three candidates. The committee actively elicited feedback from all stakeholders. They announced their decision during the school term, instead of during the summer. The Board LISTENED to the students. Doesn’t mean they had to follow whatever the students say. Where would the students get such a preposterous idea like that?

The Board should be commented for their effort to include as many people as possible in this important process and for their timely announcement. And above all, for making the right decision. Dr. Jane Fernandes is the most qualified person to lead Gallaudet into the future. Her background and credentials are impeccable.

“I can’t promise to make perfect decisions or be perfect. But I will make decisions that are in the best interests of the university,” Dr. Fernandes said humblingly in her acceptance speech (which was so appallingly disrupted). “I hope we can work together in the spirit of friendship.”

Sign me up, Dr. Fernandes.
