Dr. Fernandes is incredibly bright, articulate, and has a vision to change Gallaudet into a good, academically-respectable institution. She's like a mommy hen to the students. But when she goes out into the country, many people like her.

Keep in mind that she's the provost, not the president. So whenever IKJ's in the scene, Jane stays strictly behind the scene. Not everything is what it seems, so it's easy to point fingers at Jane, calling her names, etc.

But she's a good model of how the university has to embrace diversity in the deaf community. Her presidental skills will shine over time and with experience.

When IKJ became president, he was *really* green. Now he looks like he could sit on the biggest throne and be so comfortable in it. It took time and experience to get there. Same will go for Jane -- or anyone else.

I King Jordan has a PhD in Psychology. Is that any better than a PhD in Comparative Literature?
Stern will earn his doctorate in Education this December.

As I was reading the bio about each candidate, I was disappointed to find that these candidates are not as qualified as I expected them to be. I was hoping to see someone with a Ph.D. or Ed.D in Higher Education Adminstration or something like that.

Jane has a doctorate in Comparative Literature? While she may have adminstrative experience, I still would like to see a balance of work experience and a doctorate degree in a related field. I may just be biased because I do not like Jane after my experience with her as a MSSD student.

The bio does not state what type of doctorate Ronald will earn so to me, that bio is incomplete. Besides, he does not have experience working at the college level, which is a whole other ballgame.

Stephen has a doctorate in Counseling and Development. This is definitely much more related to the job position of being the President of Gallaudet than Jane's doctorate. He also has adminstrative experience. I just checked out the gallypreswatch.com website and saw a picture of Stephen. He seems to be really laid-back which is just fine for a counselor but for a President of Gallaudet? Can he handle the political pressures, woo people to donate money to Gallaudet, use strategies to promote Gallaudet's growth?

It will be interesting to see how this unfolds. I wish I could go to the candidates' presentations to get a feel of each person's motives.

Are the candidates' presentations open to the public? If yes, can you let us know the times they'll be talking? I, for one, would be interested in hearing what they have to say...

For a better idea of the various views within the deaf community, there's a site by some Gallaudet alumni: www.gallypreswatch.com

I too am curious about what will happen in the next few weeks. Since I don't know how qualified Ron is, I'm all for Steve (at least for now...)

Beats me, Elisa. I know Jane is one hot potato. I really don't know anything about Ron and even less about Steve. I'm curious to learn what exactly is wrong with Ron and Steven in the next few weeks.
