Obviously your boss isn't anal. Otherwise, you'd be writing an entirely different post about how clueless metro riders are when they stand idly between you and those doors.

-Jt, who unfortunately falls into this category.

Don't those people realize how much the doors will hurt you if they actually do close on you. It happened to me once, and that HURTS. it's not like NYC subways where you can stick any body part between the doors and it'll open right back up. These doors close....

Know what... I want to give tourists a heads up. Do NOT travel until after 9 am on weekdays, otherwise you're just going to get the evil eye from every person who works in DC.

In addition, you don't know their reasons for zoomin'. I would understand if it was YOU running to catch a train so you could be somewhere you are needed the most.

The primal, visceral hunger to "make the train" is ingrained in human nature. Haven't you ever found yourself zooming to make it through the doors? It's a fun challenge.

I only do it if there's an absolutely clear path between me and the train. If there's a lot of people, I just shuffle along obidently and wait for the next train. I've even skipped trains if it was too full -- the next one will be empty (the 14th law of Metro).

Hey Rob---that doesn't excuse the mad-rush fools for knocking down poor waiting souls to get on the train.

Adam, I completely sympathize, not because you're my little bro but because it just makes makes me skin crawl to see people losing their marbles catching a rush-hour train. Hey, I've been knocked down before and it wasn't a pleasant experience. The idiot must've thought I resembled the sliding doors. And it happened during the rush hour. I still remember the fall-down scene fondly...and *gasp* I was wearing an above-the-knee skirt and high heels. I'll stop right there!

So people, slow down, strategize your next move carefully, and look around before hopping on. Or simply WAIT for the next train. Trust me, you won't remember the number of times you missed your train when you hit your way-past retirement age and have a moment to think back of your youth. I know, I'll always remember my memorable fall when I get there.

When I was living in New York City, they had signs everywhere:

"Why rush? There's a train just like this one coming soon."

How appropos
